Jakobi Meyers’ right hand was wrapped up and braced on the sideline during Jacksonville’s preseason loss to the Carolina Panthers, and Jaguars head coach Liam Coen said the wideout could be looking at missed time after jamming the thumb.
Meyers did not play in the game, with starters held out, but he was spotted on the sideline wearing a glove with a brace over it. The issue also showed up earlier in the week, when he was kept out of drills late in joint practice with Carolina on Aug.
- At the time, he was not listed with an injury and stayed on the field while the Jaguars finished the final period of practice, watching from the sideline.
"We'll have to see, he kind of jammed it, so we'll have to see where it's at when we get to Tuesday," Coen said after the game. "I don't want to push it too much."
Jacksonville was already dealing with another receiver absence last week, with Parker Washington sidelined by an undisclosed injury. Washington is expected back at practice this week, but Trevor Lawrence may still be down another pass catcher if Meyers can’t go.
If that happens, the Jaguars would likely lean harder on a pair of rookie receivers who have flashed this summer: CJ Williams and Josh Cameron. Williams is listed as Meyers’ immediate backup on the unofficial depth chart and said after being drafted in April that he looks up to the veteran. Cameron has also made a habit of showing up when chances come his way, especially on jump balls and downfield throws.
Tim Jones and Chandler Brayboy are two more names who could see more work if Meyers is sidelined.
One player who does not appear to be the answer at receiver is Travis Hunter. The two-way player is trending toward a starting role on Jacksonville’s defense and is listed behind Brian Thomas Jr. on offense. In Coen’s system, Hunter has mostly been focused on that one offensive spot rather than the multiple roles he handled during his rookie season.
