Jaguars Eye Bold Draft Pick After Quiet Free Agency Moves

Jaguars eye talented cornerback Chris Johnson in mock draft, addressing depth needs with strategic roster flexibility.

How the Jaguars' Free Agency Moves Shape Their 2026 NFL Draft Strategy

The Jacksonville Jaguars have taken a more reserved approach in this year's free agency, with only one new face joining the squad. General Manager James Gladstone shed some light on this strategy, emphasizing the team's focus on flexibility as they head into the 2026 NFL Draft. This approach allows them to be adaptable, letting the draft board guide their decisions on which positions to bolster.

In a recent mock draft post-free agency, Sports Illustrated projected the Jaguars' selection at pick No. 56: cornerback Chris Johnson from San Diego State.

Jaguars Eye CB Chris Johnson at Pick No. 56

Chris Johnson, a standout at San Diego State, brings impressive credentials to the table. Standing 6-0 and weighing in at 195 pounds, Johnson has been a starter for the past two seasons.

His performance in the latest season marked a significant improvement, allowing a mere 42% completion rate on 43 targets. He also reduced opponents' average yards per catch from 16.5 in 2024 to 10.3.

Johnson's knack for playmaking was evident with four interceptions and five pass breakups. Beyond coverage, he's a dependable tackler and earned high marks from Pro Football Focus for his run defense in 2025.

Justin Melo noted, "The Jacksonville Jaguars need more depth at cornerback despite re-signing Montaric Brown. San Diego State's Chris Johnson would be a terrific option to have at boundary corner. Johnson is a sticky coverage player who can thrive in any scheme."

Although re-signing Montaric Brown addressed some concerns at cornerback, Gladstone's strategy appears to include adding more depth and fostering competition within the squad. With the Jaguars potentially in a position to select the best player available, Chris Johnson could very well be their choice when the clock strikes pick 56.
