Jaguars Are Forcing Their Way Into The AFC Contender Debate

Which team will rise to seize the Super Bowl spotlight as contenders battle through a season of surprising twists and escalating thrills?

Through eight weeks, the NFL has already handed out just about every kind of surprise. Some teams have surged, others have stumbled, and the playoff picture is already starting to take shape in strange ways.

The Rams entered the season as one of the league’s biggest talking points before Week 1, but they’re now sitting outside a playoff spot. The NFC North has turned into the league’s toughest division and could wind up sending all of its teams to the postseason. Meanwhile, the NFC East has been hit hard by quarterback injuries, with Dak Prescott standing as the exception.

Over in the AFC, the Chiefs have looked strong, while the Chargers are still searching for their first win and no one knows when that finally changes. The Bills, Patriots, Broncos, and Steelers all have the look of teams that can matter.

Still, before getting to the bold Super Bowl prediction, there are a few contenders worth sorting through.

Kansas City is drawing plenty of attention because of its new offensive weapon, Kenneth Walker III, and a defense that has held up well. The formula is simple: elite teams usually defend at a high level and can still score when needed.

The question is whether the Chiefs are that kind of team again after missing the playoffs. Even then, there may be better options.

Buffalo always seems to be in the conversation, and Josh Allen is exactly the kind of quarterback you want leading the way. But the defense remains a real issue. Unless the Bills make a move at the deadline, they may not be the team to trust with your money.

In the NFC, the 49ers have been steady and healthy, and that matters. Brock Purdy is playing like an MVP candidate, Christian McCaffrey looks like his old self, and the defense has been excellent under new defensive coordinator Raheem Morris.

The NFC North is a mess in the best possible way, because every team has a path to making noise. The Vikings own the division’s best record, but their offense still hasn’t proven it can consistently play at a high level.

The Lions are dangerous, but their defense has been one of the worst in football. The Packers have been up and down.

And the Bears? They deserve their own spotlight.

The team that should be getting more attention is Jacksonville. Liam Cohen was one of the best coaches last year and probably should have won Coach of the Year. His Jaguars are rolling right now, and Trevor Lawrence is steering them in the right direction.

They also have plenty of pieces to work with on offense, with Parker Washington, Bhayshaul Tuton, Brian Thomas Jr., Jakobi Meyers, and Brenton Strange giving the unit a long list of players who can swing a game. It’s a fun group, and there aren’t many obvious flaws in Liam Cohen’s Jaguars.

Chicago, though, is making its own case. Some teams may think the Bears gave up too much for Jeffery Simmons, but it already paid off in his first game against the Seahawks. The offense under Ben Johnson has been sneaky good, and right now it ranks as a top-10 unit in the league.

That’s why the Bears are being framed as a real playoff threat. In the postseason, they bring a different edge and can beat anyone in the NFC. At this point, it feels like a two-team race between the 49ers and Bears, though the Lions could join that conversation if their defense improves, and the Rams still have room to play better than they have so far.

Jaguars Just Sent A Strong Trade Deadline Message To The AFC

The trade deadline chatter around Brian Thomas Jr. has only underscored how much the Jaguars value the young wide receiver as they try to stay in the AFC mix. Kansas Citys reported interest says plenty about Thomas rising profile, but it also reflects Jacksonvilles position: a team trying to build around premium talent, not move it out the door.

The Chiefs may keep searching for help at receiver, with other names like Josh Downs and Hollywood Brown in the conversation, but Jacksonville has little reason to entertain a deal for a former first-round pick who fits its long-term plans. For a club viewed as one of the AFCs top contenders, sending a key piece to a rival would run against everything the deadline should represent. [Read more 🡒]

Jaguars Have A Win-Now Trade Deadline Decision To Make

The Jaguars are heading into the trade deadline with a familiar kind of pressure: a roster that has enough talent to matter, but still has clear holes that could make a difference in the stretch run. Defensive tackle, defensive end and safety all stand out as areas where help could be useful, and that has put Jacksonville in the conversation around a handful of notable names as teams around the league weigh whether to buy or sell.

Budda Baker, Derrick Brown, Christian Barmore and Khalil Mack are among the players being discussed as possible fits if Jacksonville decides to be aggressive. Nothing is done yet, of course, but that is the point of this stage of the season for a team like the Jaguars, who have to decide whether to stand pat or make a real push to sharpen the roster before the deadline passes. Jaguars Just Sent A Serious Message About Their AFC Ceiling

The Jaguars have spent the early part of the season looking less like a team trying to hang around the AFC picture and more like one trying to set the pace in it. With Week 9 approaching, their strong showing has pushed them into a conversation that still feels a little new around Jacksonville, especially when the rest of the conference keeps offering reminders of how hard it is to stay steady from one month to the next.

Elsewhere in the AFC, the contrast has been hard to miss. The Chargers and Dolphins have both run into familiar problems, with records and roster issues making their paths look bumpier than Jacksonvilles, and that only sharpens the question around the Jaguars: how real is this ceiling if the coaching, the quarterback play and the overall rhythm keep trending the right way? The answer is still unfolding, but the message theyve sent so far is hard to ignore. [Read more 🡒]
