Jaguars Are Finally Getting The Respect Their 4-1 Start Demands

The Jacksonville Jaguars surge into the NFL power rankings' top-5, marking their ascent as a formidable contender in the league.

The Jacksonville Jaguars are 4-1, and that record is starting to show up everywhere in the Week 6 power rankings. Fresh off a 19-17 win over the Philadelphia Eagles, Jacksonville has moved into the heart of the league’s top tier and, in most of the rankings floating around this week, sits inside the consensus top five.

That climb makes sense. The Jaguars are tied with the Buffalo Bills and the Baltimore Ravens for the second-best record in the AFC, trailing only the 4-0 Kansas City Chiefs. And while the standings are one thing, the weekly rankings are telling a bigger story: Jacksonville has become one of the teams people are most comfortable placing near the top.

In most of these lists, the 49ers are the only team consistently ranked ahead of the Jaguars, and that’s the highest Jacksonville has climbed since Week 1. One ranking even puts the Jaguars behind only the 49ers, with the Chiefs right behind them.

Another has Jacksonville one spot ahead of the Bills. Across the board, the Jaguars are being treated like a real top-five team, not just a hot early-season story.

That placement is especially notable because the Jaguars’ offense has still been its own worst enemy over the past two weeks. Even so, the overall unit is clearly viewed as stronger than Minnesota’s, despite the Vikings being undefeated and leaning on a special defense right now. The gap between Jacksonville and Minnesota on offense is a major part of why the Jaguars keep showing up higher.

There’s also a lot of confidence in how the Jaguars have looked snap to snap. One ranking specifically framed Jacksonville and San Francisco as the two best teams in the league in that regard, which is a strong marker for where the Jaguars stand right now. Another pointed to the Eagles win as the kind of result that keeps Jacksonville firmly in the top five.

Not every placement has been perfectly flattering. One ranking has the Jaguars slipping a bit after what it viewed as a less-than-complete performance against Philadelphia, and it also moved the Ravens past Jacksonville after Baltimore’s unlikely overtime Sunday night win over the Falcons without Lamar Jackson. Still, even in that setup, the Jaguars remained in the top tier.

The Bills are the other team most commonly mentioned near Jacksonville, and that debate is easy to understand. Buffalo beat the Jaguars in last year’s Wild Card round with mostly the same core, so an argument for the Bills over Jacksonville is there. But the counterpoint is just as clear: Buffalo also lost to a Patriots team a few weeks ago that the Jaguars handled with ease.

Seattle also shows up ahead of Jacksonville in one of these rankings, but that slot drew skepticism. The Seahawks lost a tight game to the 49ers, but they also dropped one to a poor Washington Commanders team earlier in the season, which makes their placement above the Jaguars feel shaky.

Now comes the part that could push this whole conversation even higher. Jacksonville heads to London to face the Texans in Week 6, and a win would send the Jaguars into the bye at 5-1. That would do more than keep them in the top five; it could make the case for an even bigger rise.

And with the Texans having been labeled the preseason AFC South favorites by some, the Jaguars have a chance to make them own those words. For now, though, the bigger takeaway is simple: Jacksonville has arrived in the conversation with the league’s best teams, and the rankings are reflecting it.

Jaguars Have A Discipline Problem Liam Coen Knows He Must Fix

The Jaguars left their game against the Eagles with the same kind of frustration that has been hanging around them for another week: too many flags, too much wasted time, and scoring chances slipping away. Multiple delay of game penalties short-circuited drives, and Jacksonville finished with 13 penalties in that game after also piling up 13 against the Bengals, a pattern that has become hard to ignore for a team trying to establish a cleaner identity.

Liam Coen took responsibility for the breakdowns and said the answer has to start with simplifying the play-calling process so the offense can get lined up and operate with more urgency. For a staff trying to build consistency, the issue is bigger than one messy afternoon. It is about whether the Jaguars can get the details right before the penalties begin to shape games for them. Jaguars Fans Have A Bigger Brian Thomas Jr. Concern Than Trade Buzz

Brian Thomas Jr. has become part of the trade chatter around Jacksonville, but the more immediate concern for the Jaguars is not what another team might offer. It is the quiet, underwhelming start to his sophomore season, which has left the young receiver in an unusual spot after what the team hoped would be a step forward.

Through five games, Thomas has just nine catches for 105 yards and one touchdown, production that does not match the expectations surrounding a player the Jaguars still appear willing to build around. Even with outside interest floating around, Jacksonville has not signaled any desire to move him, leaving the bigger question focused on whether the breakout still comes in time for the season to matter. Jaguars-Texans Could Come Down To What Houston Still Hasn't Fixed

With Week 6 bringing the Jaguars and Texans back into the same divisional frame, the matchup is starting to look less like a showcase for star power and more like a test of which side has done a better job of fixing its own issues. Scott Barzilla of Battle Red Blog dug into Houstons current state, and his read centered on a team still trying to sort out its offense, where scheme and playcalling have been lingering concerns even after another offseason meant to move things forward.

From Jacksonvilles perspective, that makes the trip to Houston feel winnable, especially with Barzilla also pointing to defensive injury effects that have complicated the Texans balance on that side of the ball. He flagged a few under-the-radar names worth watching and still called for a tight game, but his slight edge goes to the Jaguars, which says plenty about how much Houston still has to clean up before this rivalry feels settled again.
