That’s why Cleveland stands out as the easiest opponent on Jacksonville’s first-six-weeks slate, and why this is the game the Jaguars can’t let get away. They’re dealing with a first-place schedule, and every win matters. Dropping this one would put them in a hole they don’t need.
None of that means the Browns can be taken lightly. It just means the margin tightens dramatically after Week 1, and if Jacksonville stumbles here, it could be staring at trouble before the season really gets moving.
Last year, the Jaguars opened 4-2 through their first six games, then had to finish 9-2 over their final 11 to win the AFC South over the Texans. They may need a similar kind of start again, and that makes beating the Browns the cleanest way to begin.
If Jacksonville handles Cleveland, it can then survive going 3-2 over the next five games. Asking for 4-1 in that same stretch would be a much tougher climb. That’s the simple math behind why the Browns game already feels like one the Jaguars have to win.
