The Browns are still leaning on Deshaun Watson, and first-year offensive coordinator Travis Switzer sounds convinced the veteran quarterback is moving in the right direction.
That belief matters in Cleveland, where plenty of fans are still scratching their heads over Todd Monken’s decision back in August to stick with Watson as the Week 1 starter over second-year pro Shedeur Sanders. Monken doubled down on that call after Watson struggled in the Browns’ 31-7 preseason loss to the Buffalo Bills on Aug. 22, and the plan hasn’t changed since.
Switzer said Thursday that Watson has been building more familiarity with the offense and the people around him as the summer has gone on.
"He repeats things in meetings, and it’s like, 'Hey, you remember this?' And there’s more recall now, which is good," Switzer said about Watson.
"That’s a good feeling. You feel like everybody’s kind of picking up what you’re putting down, as far as what you’re trying to do and where you’re attacking people.
But yeah, the longer that he’s with us, he’s just going to keep getting more and more comfortable and more familiar with what we’re doing, and that’s going to be good for the whole operation."
For Cleveland, that comfort level is about more than just getting settled. The bigger question is whether Watson will start taking more chances downfield, because that could decide how long he stays in the lineup. Around the fan base, there’s a strong sense that this setup could unravel quickly, and some already believe Watson is on a short leash.
At the moment, Watson is expected to start Sunday’s game at the Jacksonville Jaguars and then the Week 2 trip to the Tampa Bay Buccaneers on Sept. 20.
But if the Browns stumble to 0-2 in Tampa, some are convinced Monken could turn to Sanders for the home opener against the Carolina Panthers on Sept. 27.
Switzer also pointed to Watson’s experience as a major reason the Browns feel good about the situation. Watson hasn’t appeared in a competitive NFL game since suffering the first of two Achilles injuries in October 2024, but he has been around the league since the Houston Texans took him in the first round of the 2017 draft. During his time in Houston, he made three Pro Bowls.
"He’s been around a long time," Switzer added about Watson. "He’s seen a lot of things.
[The Jaguars' defense is] probably not going to show a whole lot of things that he hasn’t seen, or at least it’s in a world that he’s seen. So yeah, that’s a huge piece of it, and we feel good about that."
As of Friday morning, DraftKings Sportsbook listed Cleveland as 8.5-point road underdogs against Jacksonville.
