The Colts' decision to allow quarterback Anthony Richardson to explore trade options earlier this offseason has sparked some intrigue, although interest hasn't exactly been overwhelming for the former first-round pick.
League insiders, including Jason La Canfora, anticipated potential interest from teams like the Chiefs, Packers, and even the Jaguars. However, Richardson's journey has been anything but straightforward. The Chiefs, for instance, reportedly considered Richardson before ultimately signing Justin Fields, with Richardson's health being a significant factor in their decision-making process.
One of the major concerns surrounding Richardson is his vision, especially after a freak accident in the weight room last year led to a broken orbital bone, sidelining him for much of the season. This injury only adds to existing questions about his readiness for the pro level. Richardson's college system was notably basic, and his limited practice and game reps have left some evaluators questioning his development trajectory.
Richardson, now 23, made the leap to the NFL after his redshirt sophomore year at Florida, where he was a full-time starter. The Colts saw enough potential to select him with the fourth overall pick in the 2023 NFL Draft.
His rookie contract was a lucrative four-year deal worth over $36 million, including a substantial signing bonus. The Colts also hold a fifth-year option to consider in 2026.
Unfortunately, Richardson's rookie campaign was cut short due to a shoulder injury that required season-ending surgery. He faced further setbacks in 2025, managing to appear in just two games and completing one of his two pass attempts for a mere nine yards.
As the Colts and Richardson navigate these challenges, the road ahead will require resilience and a focus on overcoming the hurdles that have so far defined his young career.
