Iowa State’s offseason reset has brought a lot of change, but one of Jimmy Rogers’ biggest additions is already earning national attention.
Defensive end Isaac Terrell, one of the familiar faces Rogers brought with him from Washington State, has been named to the Chuck Bednarik Award watch list. The annual honor, presented by the Maxwell Football Club, goes to the most outstanding defensive player in college football.
That kind of preseason recognition makes sense after the season Terrell just put together. He went from a quiet start to a breakout 2025 campaign with the Cougars, and the jump was dramatic.
Through his first two college seasons, he appeared in 21 games and totaled just 12 tackles with one tackle for loss. Last year, he turned into a force off the edge, finishing with 28 combined tackles, 12 tackles for loss, 7.0 sacks, one pass deflection and one forced fumble.
He also showed he could do it against high-level competition. Against Ole Miss, a College Football Playoff team last season, Terrell racked up four tackles for loss, two sacks and a forced fumble.
That production is part of why Cyclone fans have plenty to watch as the season approaches. The defensive line appears to be Iowa State’s strength early on, and Terrell may be the centerpiece of that group.
There’s also a built-in comfort level here. Terrell already knows Rogers and defensive coordinator Jesse Bobbit from their time together, which should make his move into the Iowa State defense smoother. He’s expected to be one of the top players on the unit, and the team has also named him one of its captains.
For a roster that looks very different after the coaching change, Terrell gives Iowa State a proven edge rusher with a track record of disrupting games. That’s exactly the sort of player who can set the tone from day one.

Iowa State Gets A Needed Fall Camp Boost Up Front
Iowa State got a welcome sight up front in fall camp with Max Baloun back on the field for his final college season. The defensive lineman has made the rounds of the college game, spending time at South Dakota State and Washington State before arriving in Ames, and his addition gives the Cyclones another experienced body in a room where depth matters.
Baloun missed spring ball while working his way back from a knee injury that ended his previous season at Washington State early, but after nearly a year of recovery he has returned to practice. For a team looking to fortify its front, simply having a veteran lineman available again is a meaningful boost, even if the bigger question is how quickly he can settle in after the long layoff. Iowa State Faces A Painful Test In Life After Matt Campbell
Iowa State is heading into 2026 with the kind of uncertainty that can reshape a program fast, and it starts with life after Matt Campbell. His move to Penn State leaves the Cyclones facing not just a coaching transition, but the kind of schedule that can expose any wobble in the foundation. The challenge is magnified by the personnel losses already on the board, making the margin for error thinner before the season even begins.
What makes the moment sting for Iowa State fans is the memory of what came before Campbell stabilized the program. The Cyclones spent years fighting uphill before his arrival, and the concern now is whether the next chapter could drift back toward those familiar losing records. With several strong opponents waiting in 2026, the job for the new staff is not only to compete, but to prove the programs gains were bigger than one coach. [Read more 🡒]
Isaac Terrell Is Becoming The Iowa State Tone Setter
Isaac Bobby Terrell arrived at Iowa State after a stop at Washington State, and he has since turned himself into one of the more important pieces on the Cyclones defense. The senior EDGE rusher came in as an undersized defensive lineman, but he has carved out a larger role through effort, energy and the kind of daily approach coaches love to point to when they talk about identity.
Now a team captain, Terrell has become a tone setter for a defense that expects him to be a key player this season. His work ethic and motor have helped define the way Iowa State wants to play, and his rise from overlooked body type to trusted leader says plenty about how far he has come. [Read more 🡒]
