AMES - The Iowa State Cyclones women's basketball team is on a mission to rewrite their story in the Big 12. After a tough 86-58 defeat at Oklahoma State on January 18, the Cyclones faced uncertainty, grappling with injuries to key players Addy Brown and Arianna Jackson. But instead of a low point, that loss became a catalyst for change.
Coach Bill Fennelly reflected on the game, calling it the team's worst performance of the season. Yet, it sparked a turnaround. With Jackson making an early return and Brown back in action after missing 11 games, Iowa State has transformed, winning five straight games since.
As they gear up for a rematch against the Cowgirls at Hilton Coliseum, the Cyclones (21-7, 9-7 Big 12) are in a much stronger position. Fennelly notes, “We’re in a better place,” highlighting their 7-2 record since that pivotal loss. And with senior night on the horizon, it’s a special moment to honor forward Sydney Harris, who has been a sharpshooter, hitting 42.9% from beyond the arc during her time with the team.
A victory over Oklahoma State (21-8, 10-6) would not only tie the Cyclones for sixth place in the conference but also boost their NCAA Tournament prospects. The Cowgirls, led by senior guard Micah Gray’s 14.6 points per game, are coming off their own setback, a 72-40 loss to No. 19 West Virginia.
Backup point guard Reese Beaty expressed the team’s readiness for a more competitive matchup, emphasizing the importance of adjustments. Meanwhile, Brown is gradually increasing her minutes, aiming to reach her previous high of 31.9 minutes per game. Her return has been a key factor in the Cyclones’ resurgence.
Fennelly is optimistic about Brown’s progress, stating, “If we could inch that into the 25 to 30 range, that would be the ultimate goal for her.” Her contributions, averaging 12.6 points, 8.8 rebounds, and 5.6 assists, are vital as the team pushes forward.
As the Cyclones prepare for Wednesday's game, the stakes are high, and the motivation is clear. Fennelly captures the sentiment perfectly: “This time of year, a lot of people are playing games because they have to, not because they want to.
That’s not the case with us.” Expect a determined Iowa State squad ready to make their mark.
