Kansas City, Mo. - Iowa State basketball has a tried-and-true formula, and under head coach T.J. Otzelberger, they've been serving up victories with consistency.
In their Big 12 Tournament debut, the Cyclones delivered a standout performance, dominating the Sun Devils 91-42. This emphatic win propels Iowa State to the quarterfinals against Texas Tech, while Arizona State's season-and head coach Bobby Hurley's tenure-comes to an end.
"Our guys came out with a great level of energy and intensity from the start," Otzelberger shared. "We knew it was going to be important to try to speed them up and score off of our defense.
Our guys did a great job there. We're always at our best when we're doing that."
Iowa State's defense was relentless, putting Arizona State in a bind right from the tip-off. The Sun Devils coughed up the ball on their first four possessions, and by halftime, they had amassed 15 turnovers-more than double their seven made field goals.
The Cyclones capitalized on these mistakes, turning steals into scoring opportunities. Their pressure forced a sideline out-of-bounds violation and a five-second call on a baseline inbounds play. Iowa State's defensive prowess left the Sun Devils scrambling for answers in the T-Mobile Center.
Freshman guard Killyan Toure was a defensive standout, holding Arizona State guard Moe Odum to just two points on 1-of-6 shooting. "We kept the same intensity the whole game, so that was good," Toure noted.
"I did my job, as well. I set the tone in the beginning on the point guard, even in the beginning of the second half."
Iowa State's blend of energy and defensive tenacity showcased why they're a force to be reckoned with in the tournament, leaving fans eager to see what they’ll cook up next against Texas Tech.
