Iowa State's Upset Chance Just Got More Real Against BYU

Can BYU maintain their dominance without their top rusher in a crucial game against an emerging Iowa State under new leadership?

BYU enters Week 6 with the kind of profile that makes people pay attention: a No. 8 AP ranking, a defense that has carried its weight, and a home game that should look manageable on paper. But the Cougars also took a real hit on offense when top rusher LJ Martin was ruled out for a month with a lower body injury, and that changes the feel of this matchup against Iowa State.

Martin was a central piece of BYU’s ground game, and his absence leaves quarterback Bear Bachmeier with more to shoulder. That rushing attack had been productive, ranking 16th nationally, while the passing game has been far less explosive, sitting 114th in FBS and producing under 180 yards per game.

Even so, BYU still has ways to keep the chains moving. The Cougars rank fourth nationally in third down conversions, and they have other backs, including Bachmeier, who can help steady the offense.

Iowa State arrives with some momentum after a wild 45-42 win over West Virginia. Aiden Flora was the star of that one, piling up five total touchdowns in a game that showcased just how dangerous the Cyclones can be when things are clicking.

The concern, though, is on the other side of the ball. Iowa State gave up 518 total yards and five touchdown drives of 60 yards or more to a West Virginia offense that ranks 117th in the country.

There is confidence building under first-year coach Jimmy Rogers, and the Cyclones have shown plenty of physicality. Still, this is a different challenge: a first true road trip outside Iowa, on a short week, against a top-10 opponent. If Iowa State wants to hang around, it has to sustain drives and avoid giving the ball away in a tough environment.

The betting line reflects that uphill climb, with BYU listed as a 10.5-point favorite and the total set at 46.5. The key matchup is pretty straightforward: BYU’s ability to pressure the quarterback and shut down the run should eventually tilt the game its way.

If Iowa State can establish its ground game and force the Cougars into longer possessions, it has a shot to keep things tight. If not, BYU’s balance and home-field edge should take over.

The Big Lead’s pick is BYU 31, Iowa State 17, with the Cougars covering the spread and the game going over.

Iowa State Faces One Offensive Test That Could Decide BYU Upset Hopes

Iowa State heads into its road trip to face No. 8 BYU with the same question hanging over its offense that has followed the Cyclones through their toughest matchups this season: can they generate enough against an elite defense to stay in striking distance? The numbers have not favored Iowa State when the opponent can really get after it, with the Cyclones producing fewer points and fewer yards per play against stronger defensive fronts, and this one brings another stiff test in a hostile setting.

BYU has earned its high ranking in part by controlling the run, which puts extra pressure on Iowa States key pieces to find answers early and often. Aiden Flora and Jaylen Ranyor will be among the players the Cyclones lean on most, but the larger issue is whether Iowa State can do enough offensively to make the game look different from the others in which it has been bottled up. Iowa State's Surprising Start Suddenly Puts Bowl Hopes In Play

A 3-2 start has Iowa State in a much better spot than preseason projections suggested, especially after all the roster turnover that left plenty of questions in August. The Cyclones have picked up wins over West Virginia, Bowling Green and Southeast Missouri State, and while the losses to ranked Utah and Iowa showed how thin the margin still is, the early record has given the season a more promising shape than expected.

Now the conversation has shifted from simply finding answers to chasing seven wins and a bowl berth. The road there is still uncertain, but with upcoming games still to play, Iowa State has at least put itself in position to make the second half matter in a way few outside the program would have predicted before the season began.
