Iowa State got the kind of Saturday it was hoping for in Week 3, and the biggest reason was the ground game.
After pushing Iowa to the brink on the road last week, the Cyclones came back home and handled Bowling Green with ease. The win was convincing, but the more important takeaway was how much cleaner and more dangerous Iowa State looked running the football.
That part of the offense has been slow to develop, which makes sense considering all the changes and the fact that the Cyclones lost every starter on offense. But against Bowling Green, Iowa State made a clear point of leaning on the run, and it paid off in a big way. The Cyclones piled up more than 300 rushing yards and had several players contribute.
Aiden Flora delivered the headline performance. The young back broke out in a major way, finishing with 194 yards on only 12 carries and scoring twice on the ground. He added even more to the day by taking a punt back for a touchdown, giving him three total scores.
Jaylen Raynor also chipped in with 60 rushing yards, helping keep the pressure on Bowling Green throughout the game. And in a lopsided contest, Arnold Barnes III got plenty of work as well, finishing with more than 60 yards and two rushing touchdowns.
The passing game still has room to grow, but Iowa State barely needed it on Saturday. The Cyclones were too effective on the ground to lean on much else.
For a team that already showed it can hang with a Top 25 opponent, this was another encouraging step. The opponent may have been a struggling Bowling Green squad, but the way Iowa State ran the ball was the kind of development that matters heading into Big 12 play.
