Iowa State May Have Finally Found The Offense Fans Needed

Against all odds, Iowa State shocks Oklahoma State with a last-second victory, showcasing emerging stars and the resilience of their squad.

Iowa State walked into Halloween night carrying a rough season’s worth of doubt, and walked out of Jack Trice Stadium with the kind of win that changes the conversation. The Cyclones outlasted Oklahoma State 51-49 in a wild shootout, with Kyle Konrardy delivering the game-winner on a walkoff field goal.

That result pushed Iowa State to 4-4 and finally gave the Cyclones a breakthrough after a brutal stretch against ranked opponents. They had already taken losses to Utah, BYU and Arizona, and they also fell to Iowa in Week 2, leaving them 0-4 overall before this one. Against the Cowboys, though, they found just enough answers in a game that swung back and forth all night.

One of the biggest questions going in centered on Jaylen Raynor. After getting benched at halftime against Arizona, he was given the start again, and he made the most of it.

Raynor turned in his best outing of the season, completing 18 of 28 passes for 309 yards and three touchdowns with one interception. He also added 48 rushing yards and another score, looking far more settled and in command of the offense.

The performance went a long way toward locking him in as the starter moving forward. Offensive coordinator Tyler Roehl kept things simpler, and Raynor looked comfortable operating within it. Freshman Jamal Polite Jr. also continued building chemistry with him while stepping into a bigger role because of injuries.

Oklahoma State, for its part, brought plenty of firepower. Drew Mestemaker threw for 323 yards and five touchdowns with one interception, while Caleb Hawkins piled up 194 rushing yards and two scores. Hawkins also added 81 receiving yards and another touchdown, keeping the Cowboys dangerous all game long.

Even without a sack, Iowa State’s pass rush showed some signs of life. The Cyclones finished with 15 total pressures, including 12 hurries and three hits. Mestemaker was forced off his spot at times and had to escape the pocket, which was a step in the right direction for a unit that has struggled to get after the quarterback.

And then there was Aiden Flora, who keeps making it impossible to ignore him. The former walk-on handled 29 carries and churned out 221 yards with two touchdowns, once again giving Iowa State a steady, punishing answer on the ground. His production has become a centerpiece for the offense, and opponents now have to build a plan around stopping him.

Iowa State's Bowl Push Comes Down To A Defining Final Stretch

Iowa State has put itself in position to make the late-season conversation matter, sitting at 4-4 after collecting wins over Southeast Missouri State, Bowling Green, West Virginia and Oklahoma State while taking its losses against ranked opponents. The Cyclones are still two victories shy of bowl eligibility, which means the next month will decide whether this season becomes a step forward or just a near miss.

Baylor, Cincinnati, UCF and Kansas State now make up the final stretch, and ESPN analytics give each matchup its own level of difficulty. For Iowa State, the path is clear enough in theory but still demanding in practice, with every remaining game carrying real weight as the Cyclones try to turn a solid start into a postseason berth. Arizona Already Has An Opening Night Debate Fans Wont Ignore

The Big 12 wasted no time reminding everyone why it is going to be a nightly grind, opening the season with 15 of 16 teams in action and finishing the first wave at 13-2. There were plenty of eye-catching performances mixed in with the usual early-season turbulence, from Baylors Rob Wright going for 33 points in a win over Ohio State to UCFs Dior Johnson pouring in 41 in a narrow escape against Florida Gulf Coast.

Arizonas opener may have generated the loudest conversation, though, after Ivan Kharchenkov scored 38 points in a near comeback against UCLA. For Iowa State fans, the bigger takeaway is how quickly the leagues margin for error disappeared after the Cyclones unexpected loss to Memphis, and how little room there is for anyone to settle in before the Big 12 race starts stacking up results that will matter later. Bill Fennellys Final Ride Opened With A Moment Cyclones Fans Will Feel

Before Iowa State tipped off its season-opening win over Grambling State, Bill Fennelly got a gesture that fit the moment. Courtney Simmons, the Grambling head coach, sent over a handwritten note for Fennelly, who is in his 32nd and final season leading the Cyclones. It was the kind of small, personal acknowledgment that carries extra weight in a sport where coaching trees and relationships run deep.

The Cyclones then handled business on the floor with a 90-61 victory, getting solid contributions from Mya Babbitt, Tjasa Turnsek, Xiao Zhang and Gift Ezekiel. But the note lingered after the game because it spoke to something bigger than one opener. Fennelly said it meant a lot to be recognized for the impact he has had on womens basketball, a fitting start to a farewell season that figures to be watched closely in Ames and beyond. [Read more 🡒]
