Chicago - As the final buzzer sounded on Friday night, Iowa State found themselves in a familiar, albeit frustrating, position. The Cyclones' impressive season concluded in the Sweet 16, a stage they know all too well.
Tennessee, a No. 6 seed, continued their impressive run under coach Rick Barnes, advancing to their third consecutive Elite Eight with a 76-62 win over No. 2 seed Iowa State. The Cyclones wrapped up their 2025-26 campaign with 29 victories, matching the second-highest win total in the program's history. Yet again, for the third time in five years and the second time in three seasons, Iowa State's journey ended at the Sweet 16.
But let's be clear: the Sweet 16 isn't the limit for Iowa State. This isn't an inevitable stopping point. The Cyclones have the potential to push further in March Madness, and the foundation is set for greater achievements.
Throughout the season, Iowa State consistently ranked in the top 10 of every AP Top 25 poll since December 1. They maintained a spot in the KenPom top 10 for the last four months of the season, earning a well-deserved No. 2 seed in the NCAA Tournament.
With the right breaks, they were more than capable of reaching the Elite Eight or even the Final Four. But as we know, March Madness isn't just about crowning the best team-it's a thrilling spectacle we all love.
The loss to Tennessee drops Iowa State to 1-7 all-time in the Sweet 16, marking the worst record for any team that has reached this stage at least seven times. Cyclone fans have every reason to feel uneasy about this round, especially with five straight Sweet 16 losses since their victory over UCLA in 2000.
Yet, there's no denying the potential within this program. They have what it takes to break through, and it's only a matter of time before they do.
"I think each year is different," said Cyclone coach T.J. Otzelberger. "Independent variables that come into play."
The Cyclones' journey may have ended here this season, but the future remains bright for a program ready to transcend its current barriers.
