Iowa State’s run of NBA draft relevance may not be over yet.
After Joshua Jefferson ended the Cyclones’ five-year drought without a player selected by going in the first round of the 2026 NBA Draft, Iowa State now has another name showing up on the radar. This time, it’s forward Tre Singleton, who landed at No. 83 on Jeremy Woo’s updated 2027 NBA Draft Big Board for ESPN.
Singleton arrives in Ames as one of the newcomers, joining Iowa State after transferring from Northwestern. He’s a true sophomore, and while he’s still very much on the edge of the NBA conversation, that’s not a bad place to start. Jefferson wasn’t seen as much of a pro prospect at this stage last year either, and his senior season changed that in a big way.
That’s part of what makes Singleton interesting. He drew comparisons to Jefferson in the transfer portal before deciding to follow the same path to Iowa State, and his first game in a Cyclones uniform gave a glimpse of why. In 28 minutes, Singleton posted 11 points, 11 rebounds, one assist, two steals and one block.
That line looks a lot like the kind of all-around production Jefferson brought to the table, and there’s reason to think Singleton’s numbers could climb as he settles deeper into T.J. Otzelberger’s system. The early signs point to a player who can affect the game on both ends.
For Iowa State, that matters beyond draft boards. If Singleton keeps rising, it likely means he’s doing his part to help the Cyclones win. He still has plenty to prove before anyone calls him a true NBA prospect, but the raw tools and work ethic are there.
And after watching Jefferson become the vocal point of the Iowa State game plan on offense, the door is open for Singleton to carve out something similar. His confidence with the ball is already growing, and he’s making an impact in ways that go beyond scoring.

Iowa State Faces Early Pressure To Fix One Troubling Opener Issue
Iowa States season opener against Memphis offered an early reminder that even a veteran-looking roster can need some quick recalibration. The Cyclones dropped an 80-76 decision at a neutral site, and with Killyan Toure still unavailable, head coach T.J. Otzelberger is already looking at how the rotation can settle in while the team gets a better feel for itself.
Otzelberger said the upcoming home games should give Iowa State a chance to adjust lineups and sort out player roles, but the bigger concern is on the defensive end. For a program that usually leans on toughness and structure, the opener made it clear that the Cyclones will need a sharper response soon if they want to avoid letting one rough night linger. Iowa State Faces A Defining Test After Its Oklahoma State Breakthrough
After a needed bounce-back win over Oklahoma State, Iowa State is trying to turn one good Saturday into something more lasting as it heads into a matchup with Baylor. The Cyclones have already shown both sides of their profile this season, following that breakthrough with a loss to Arizona, and now they get another chance to steady things against a Baylor team that is coming home off a decisive win over UCF.
For Iowa State, the challenge is less about remembering what went right against Oklahoma State and more about carrying that edge into a tougher follow-up spot. Coach Jimmy Rogers has been talking about the teams mindset, and the Cyclones will need it against a Baylor defense that has been sturdy under interim coach Joe Klanderman. Iowa State has also gotten a lift from running back Aiden Floras recent play, giving the Cyclones a few reasons to believe this stretch can still tilt in their favor. [Read more 🡒]
Baylor Faces A Huge Homecoming Test With Momentum Suddenly Building
Baylors season has taken on a different feel since Dave Arandas departure, and the Bears carried that into a win over UCF under interim head coach Joe Klanderman. Now they turn to homecoming with Iowa State coming to Waco, a matchup that arrives at a moment when Baylor is trying to prove the momentum is real and not just a one-week bounce.
The expectation around the Bears is a familiar one: solid defense, enough offense to stay on schedule, and a chance for the new staff to keep the group moving in the right direction. DJ Lagways recognition as Big 12 Offensive Player of the Week after the UCF game only adds to the attention, and Baylor will need him to carry that form into a tougher test against the Cyclones.
