Iowa State Heads Into Bye Week With One Frustrating Offensive Problem

Iowa State Cyclones' lackluster offense falters against the BYU Cougars, highlighting their need for improvement ahead of the bye week.

Iowa State’s offense never found a rhythm Friday night, and that proved to be the difference in a road loss to No. 8 BYU.

The Cyclones arrived in Provo coming off a big Week 5 win and looking for an upset in a rare Friday night matchup. Instead, BYU set the tone immediately. On the opening possession, Bear Bachmeier used his legs to help power a 75-yard touchdown drive, finished off by a Journee Tonga score.

Iowa State did answer with some points early. After a couple of punts, Kyle Konrardy drilled a field goal to trim the margin to 7-3. But the Cyclones could not build on that momentum, and the BYU defense kept forcing Iowa State into empty trips.

The Cougars also had chances to extend the lead with field goals, but they chose to keep pushing on fourth down. That aggression backfired twice in the first half, with BYU failing to convert on a fourth-and-four and then getting stopped again later in the second quarter.

Even so, BYU’s big-play ability eventually broke through. Bachmeier connected with Roger Saleapaga on a 63-yard gain, and the Cougars later cashed in with a touchdown pass to Kyler Kasper.

Iowa State’s offense stayed stuck in neutral after halftime. The Cyclones could not generate much of anything, which gave BYU more opportunities to take control. The Cougars kept going for touchdowns rather than settling for field goals, and again came up short on a third-quarter fourth-down attempt.

That only delayed the inevitable. With Iowa State still unable to move the ball, BYU hit another explosive play when Legend Glasker hauled in a 75-yard touchdown catch to put the game out of reach.

The Cyclones, who had scored 45 points the week before, finally showed a little life in the fourth quarter when Christian Greenlaw found the end zone. But by then, the damage was already done.

The final stretch offered Iowa State a reminder that it could hang around with a highly ranked opponent, but the offensive performance was not nearly enough to turn that into a win. The Cyclones now head into a Week 7 bye.

Iowa State Heads Into Bye Week With One Alarming Problem

Iowa States first Big 12 road test of the season brought a harsh reality check, as the Cyclones fell 24-10 at No. 8 BYU and were outplayed in just about every phase. The offense never found a rhythm, the defense spent too much time under pressure, and the final numbers told the story clearly: 200 yards gained, 506 allowed.

With a bye week now offering a breather, the focus shifts to the kind of fixes that do not show up in a box score but can decide a season. Head coach Jimmy Rogers and linebacker Carson Willich both pointed to communication and mental sharpness as priorities, and Iowa State enters the break knowing the next stretch will say a lot about whether this loss was a stumble or something more concerning. Iowa State Keeps Getting The Kickoff Slot Fans Dread Most

Iowa States home crowds have told a pretty clear story over the last four seasons: the later the kickoff, the better the turnout. Night games have produced the strongest average attendance and the highest sellout rates, while morning starts have consistently lagged behind, a pattern that says as much about fan habits as it does about the atmosphere inside Jack Trice Stadium. For a program that leans heavily on a loud home field, the timing of kickoff has become a bigger part of the equation than it might seem at first glance.

This season has only sharpened that contrast because the Cyclones have not had a single night home game, even though the numbers point to that window as the most reliable way to pack the place. It leaves Iowa State in the familiar spot of waiting on the television schedule and hoping the next assignment lands in the slot fans prefer least, even as the data suggest the programs best crowds are still tied to the lights. Iowa State Heads Into Bye Week With One Offense Decision Looming

Iowa State heads into its bye week still searching for answers on offense after the loss to BYU, a game in which the unit never found much rhythm in the first half. The Cyclones have been trying to piece together more consistent production, and the pause in the schedule gives the staff a natural window to sort through what has worked, what has not, and where the next spark might come from.

Jimmy Rogers has already made it clear he believes Connor Moberly has the talent to help, which is why the quarterback discussion is suddenly so central. Jaylen Raynor remains in the mix for now, and no official switch has been announced, but the question hanging over the program is whether Iowa State will use the bye to make a change at the sport's most important position.
