Cyclone Fans Will HATE This Joel Klatt Prediction

Analyst Joel Klatt shakes up the playoff predictions by picking Iowa's strong but risky path over traditional SEC powers for a coveted CFP spot.

Joel Klatt is putting his money on Iowa.

With the Hawkeyes sitting at 5-1 and a manageable path still ahead, the FOX analyst said on a recent episode of the Joel Klatt Show that Iowa belongs in the College Football Playoff over an SEC contender that reached the semifinals last season. Klatt’s case starts with the record, but it really comes down to what’s left on the schedule and how Iowa wins games.

“When you look at Iowa, they only have one loss, and then look at the rest of their schedule. You can see a very clear path to 11-1. I think that they are going to be favored to win the rest of their games.

"I don't think going to Minnesota is all that easy. I don't think going to Northwestern is all that easy.

I do not think playing Nebraska is going to be all that easy. And watch out for Wisconsin, because Wisconsin's defense is a lot better than people realize," Klatt said about Iowa's schedule.

He also brushed off the concern that the Hawkeyes’ quarterback situation should derail anything, even with all the noise around Hank Brown and Jeremy Hecklinksi. Klatt pointed to the way Iowa is already winning games and made it clear he views that formula as the program’s identity.

"This Iowa team, they just ran for 260 yards on the road, and the fact that they have a backup quarterback in right now doesn't bother me as much because Iowa is not a quarterback-centric program.

"Jeremy Hecklinski comes in and, like, 'Okay, can you throw to the tight end and hand the football off?'"It's Iowa. This is what we do," continued Klatt.

The wrinkle, of course, is that Iowa may not get the kind of statement win that usually helps sell a playoff case. That means the Hawkeyes likely have very little margin for error if they want to stay in the mix.

"I think 11-1 would get them in. I don't think they can lose a second game because they're not going to have a tremendous resume, even though I don't think the back end of their schedule gets the respect that it deserves," said Klatt about Iowa's CFP chances.

Klatt also lined Iowa up against Ole Miss, comparing the two teams and leaning toward the Hawkeyes. Ole Miss is 4-1, and while its schedule looks tougher on paper, Klatt’s view is that the Rebels still need the kind of finish that keeps their résumé alive.

"So, most likely to go to the CFP? I'm going to go Iowa.

I'm going to go Iowa right there. I think that they would be more likely over Ole Miss because of what's going on," Klatt ended with.

That’s the debate in a nutshell: Iowa has the cleaner path, but not much room to breathe. Minnesota, Northwestern, Nebraska, and Wisconsin are all still on the board, while Purdue and Illinois offer some relief without exactly guaranteeing anything. Ole Miss, meanwhile, still has Missouri, Texas, Georgia, Mississippi State, and Oklahoma waiting.

The question now is whether the committee will demand 11-1 from Iowa or whether 10-2 is enough. Last year, Alabama, Oklahoma, and Miami all got in with two losses, and that precedent could matter.

If it does, Iowa may have a little more wiggle room than Klatt suggested. If not, the Hawkeyes will need to keep stacking wins and let the bracket sort itself out later.
