Trey Thompson Stays Positive Despite Setback That Changed His Freshman Season

Despite an unexpected setback, Iowa freshman Trey Thompson builds strength and resilience for a promising future in college basketball.

Trey Thompson's first year at Iowa hasn't gone as planned, but he's not letting that dampen his spirits or his impact on the team. A highly-touted four-star recruit, Thompson was expected to bring immediate scoring off the bench for the Hawkeyes. However, an early illness sidelined him for a month, leading to a redshirt decision.

Despite this setback, Thompson is making the most of his time off the court. In a recent media session, he shared insights into his growth and development during this challenging period.

"I've matured a lot, especially defensively," Thompson explained. "I used to guard one or two actions, but now I can handle three, four, maybe even five.

I've improved at getting through screens and guarding the ball. Plus, I've gained 20 pounds since arriving, which has been a big help."

Thompson's focus remains on improvement and development, embracing the rigorous training and practice schedule. "Getting sick wasn't ideal, but I'm here to get better.

The weight room and daily practices push me. I'm grateful for the opportunity, and I know Coach McCollum still believes in me."

Even though he's not playing in games, Thompson finds joy and learning opportunities from the bench. "I've got the best seat in the house," he said with a smile.

"Watching Coach McCollum's passion, even when he's upset, is something else. He loves to win, and so do I.

I appreciate being here, watching my friends play."

Looking ahead, Thompson remains a key piece in Coach McCollum's plans. With several seniors, including Bennett Stirtz, leaving after this season, the Hawkeyes will need young talent to step up.

Thompson is poised to be a major contributor, ready to showcase the skills that made him a top prospect. His year of development could set the stage for a breakout season next year.
