Tavion Banks Eyes Return To Iowa Basketball But There's A Catch

As Tavion Banks' eligibility remains in question, Iowa basketball navigates a pivotal waiting period that could reshape their 2026-27 season.

Tavion Banks, a senior forward for the Iowa Hawkeyes, has been a standout player this season under new head coach Ben McCollum. Standing at 6-foot-7, Banks is the team's second-leading scorer, averaging 10.7 points per game and pulling down 4.8 rebounds per contest. His shooting has been a revelation, hitting 45.2 percent from beyond the arc on 31 attempts, making him a crucial two-way player for the Hawkeyes.

Banks' journey to Iowa City is unique. He spent two years at Northwest Florida State in the JUCO ranks, played his junior season at Drake, and is now making waves in his senior year at Iowa.

Thanks to the Diego Pavia ruling, which allows JUCO athletes an extra year of eligibility, Banks and others could potentially extend their college careers. This ruling has already granted additional eligibility for the 2025-26 season, and there's an ongoing case that might extend it further into 2026-27.

Coach McCollum touched on this during a recent appearance on Hawk Talk with Gary Dolphin and Bobby Hansen, highlighting the uncertainty surrounding the eligibility rules. "There's always still a chance," McCollum noted, indicating that the team is prepared for any outcome.

Banks has been pivotal in key victories, particularly against Indiana and Nebraska. In the win over the Huskers, Banks recorded six points, 10 rebounds, two steals, and a block, showcasing his defensive prowess and competitive spirit. McCollum praised Banks' tenacity, especially in securing 50-50 balls, calling it one of his best defensive performances.

Looking ahead, if Banks returns next season, Iowa will have a versatile lineup with players like Cooper Koch, Isaia Howard, Tate Sage, Trey Thompson, and promising freshman Ethan Harris. The Hawkeyes are ready for any scenario regarding Banks' eligibility, but for now, it's a waiting game for him and other former JUCO athletes.
