Week 7 delivered a little of everything for Iowa high school football, from a comeback in Class 5A to a record night in Urbandale and a coaching milestone at Van Meter.
Southeast Polk was the team staring at the toughest finish. The Rams, the last undefeated Class 5A team in the state, trailed Waukee Northwest 28-19 with 12 minutes left on the road. They still found a way to leave with a 32-28 win, and the Cooper brothers powered the turnaround.
Stanley Cooper, a senior running back, carried 30 times for 182 yards and scored two touchdowns. Adrian Cooper, a junior, added 21 rushes for 108 yards and five touchdowns. Southeast Polk piled up 303 rushing yards on 56 carries, while Boston Bailey threw for 86 yards.
Waukee Northwest got strong production from Mack Heitland, who passed for 181 yards and two touchdowns and also ran for 69 yards and two more scores. Paulo Tobongye rushed for 68 yards, and Jordon Green and Miles Leifker each caught touchdown passes.
Urbandale’s night was more comfortable, and Landon Rinnan made sure it came with a place in the school record book. In a 40-13 win over Des Moines Lincoln, the senior and Air Force Academy commit became the first J-Hawk to score six touchdowns in a game. That broke a mark shared by seven former Urbandale players.
Rinnan also set a new school scoring record with 36 total points, topping a standard that had stood since 1992. He entered the week with 994 passing yards and 10 passing touchdowns, plus 491 rushing yards and seven rushing scores. The victory gave Urbandale five wins, matching its highest total since 2022.
At Van Meter, Eric Trudo reached a major career milestone. The Bulldogs beat Grand View Christian 42-21, giving Trudo his 200th career coaching victory. Keenan Lundy ran for 158 yards and three touchdowns and also threw a TD pass to Miles Buse.
Van Meter improved to 6-1 and has won six straight since a Week 1 loss to Des Moines Christian. Trudo and the Bulldogs will go for win No. 201 next Friday at Clarke Community.
West Fork also kept rolling. The Warhawks beat West Hancock 48-19 to move to 7-0, a result that stood out in a series that had been controlled almost entirely by the Eagles.
Since 2008, the teams had met 12 times, and West Hancock had won the first 11, including a 33-20 win last year. In the three seasons before that, West Fork had not scored a point against the Eagles.
This time, that script finally changed.

Iowa Fans Have Plenty Riding On These Big Ten Results
With Big Ten play starting to sort itself out in Week 6, Iowa fans have more than a casual interest in the conference scoreboard. The Hawkeyes path is tied closely to how the league shakes out around them, and this weekend offers a full slate of games worth monitoring, from Indiana to UCLA to Penn State and beyond. For a fan base that lives with every tiebreaker, every standings shift and every conference upset, this is the kind of Saturday that can matter long after the final whistle.
The rooting guide points Iowa followers toward a handful of matchups that could help shape the picture in the Big Ten, with games involving Northwestern, Michigan State, Maryland and Purdue also in the mix. Some of these results may feel more relevant than the actual kickoff times or TV windows, because the bigger issue is how the league stack will look when the dust settles. For Iowa, the week is less about one score than the ripple effect across the conference, and that leaves plenty of eyes on the out-of-town action. [Read more 🡒]
Iowa's Big Win Brought Back A Debate Fans Can't Ignore
Iowas response to its previous loss looked like the kind of complete rebound fans had been waiting for, with the offense and defense both doing enough to beat Washington and steady the mood around the program. Kamari Moulton powered the ground game with 208 rushing yards and two touchdowns, while Jeremy Hecklinski stepped in at quarterback because of Hank Browns injury and helped keep the attack moving with 202 passing yards and two scores.
Even with the win, the game left behind a familiar conversation point for Iowa supporters, because the defense was tested in ways that did not fully disappear just because the final result went the Hawkeyes way. Washington backup quarterback Elijah Brown found room through the air for 251 yards and three touchdowns, a reminder that while Iowa could celebrate the bounce-back performance, there are still questions about how sturdy the pass coverage really is when the competition starts stretching it.
