Pat McAfee is sending $1 million to the UI Stead Family Children’s Hospital after the ESPN College GameDay stop in Iowa City.
The donation comes after a weekend that had Iowa City buzzing from start to finish, even with the Hawkeyes falling to Ohio State. The bigger picture, though, was bigger than the final score. The scene around the game underscored what college sports can be at its best: passion, fandom, and a community that shows up loud and proud.
McAfee has made a habit of backing the student field goal attempts on College GameDay, putting up the money himself when students try to drill a kick that can change their lives. This weekend’s attempt did not split the uprights, but McAfee still moved forward with a major gesture tied to the city and the hospital.
On The Pat McAfee Show, he announced the donation and explained why he felt it mattered to follow through.
"A lot of people were coming after me for not doing the donation, and I think those people are pretty right. It didn't feel right after as I was thinking about it."
We will donate a million to that children's hospital. I would like to be a part of help for them.
And I also think we are going to be doing some work together in the future.
"I would just like to let everybody know we will be donating one million dollars to that hospital. We would like to thank that hospital for their hospitality and for what they do.
"They need to know how much they empower and help everybody else that comes in contact with them. Keep kicking ass," McAfee said.

Iowa Lost Saturday But Kinnick Still Showed What Makes This Program Different
Even on a Saturday that ended in a loss, Kinnick Stadium still put on the kind of scene that explains why Iowa football has such a different kind of hold on its fans. ESPNs College GameDay made its first stop of the season on the University of Iowa campus for the matchup with Ohio State, and before kickoff the crew visited the Iowa Childrens Hospital, spending time with patients and families in a reminder that this place is about more than what happens on the field.
The atmosphere around the stadium once again centered on The Wave, the tradition that has become one of college footballs most recognizable gestures and one that speaks to the connection between the team, the hospital and the community. For Iowa, the result against Ohio State will go into the record book, but the broader story from Saturday was the staying power of local support and the way Kinnick keeps turning a game day into something bigger. Iowa's QB Picture Just Got More Complicated Ahead Of Washington
Iowas Week 6 depth chart brought a little more clarity at running back, but at quarterback it only added another layer to an already tricky situation. Hank Brown is listed as the starter for the Washington game even after getting hurt in the previous contest, and that keeps the Hawkeyes most important position squarely in the spotlight as they prepare for a Big Ten matchup that could demand more stability than theyve shown there lately.
Jeremy Hecklinski also stays in the conversation after stepping in and handling himself well when Brown went down, giving Iowa an alternate option if the situation shifts before kickoff. Behind them, Kamari Moulton is listed as the lead back, with other running backs expected to share the workload, which suggests the Hawkeyes may lean on a committee approach in the backfield while waiting to see how their quarterback situation sorts itself out. Iowa Faces A Desperate Washington Team In A Huge Road Test
Friday night brings a useful early measuring-stick game for Iowa, with the Hawkeyes heading west to face Washington in a Big Ten matchup that carries some extra weight for both teams. Iowa enters at 4-1 and can head into its bye week with another win, while the Huskies are trying to steady their season and keep their College Football Playoff path from narrowing any further.
The matchup also adds a little history to the trip, since this is only the second Big Ten meeting between the programs and Iowa owns a 4-3 edge in the all-time series. For a Hawkeyes team looking to bank another road win before the break, it is the kind of test that can shape how the rest of the fall feels, especially with a Washington team under pressure to answer at home.
