That’s exactly what happened with transfer wide receiver Tony Diaz, who has already turned heads in Iowa City with his spring-ball catches and the kind of relentless energy Ferentz clearly loves. Diaz, a transfer from the University of Texas Rio Grande Valley, has built a reputation around his “Boogeyman” nickname and a style that has quickly made him a fan favorite.
At Big Ten Football Media Days, Ferentz made it clear he’s been impressed by Diaz’s drive and desire. He said the most endearing thing a receiver can do is simply want the ball, calling that idea “pretty stupid” before landing on the comparison that stood out: “Bob Sanders wanted to tackle, Marshall Yanda wanted to block, and Tony Diaz wants to catch the ball.”
That’s elite company, and it says plenty about how Ferentz views Diaz’s approach. He described him as someone who works hard and chases the football like a retriever, which fits the picture Diaz has already painted since arriving on campus.
The production backs up the buzz. Diaz posted 881 receiving yards and 11 touchdowns on 67 catches last season for UTRGV, a redshirt freshman year that put him firmly on the radar. He’s already been named a player to watch on offense next season, and Iowa’s passing game could use exactly that kind of spark.
Diaz isn’t the only new face in the mix. Fellow transfer Evan James gives the Hawkeyes another option at wide receiver, joining returners Reece Vander Zee and KJ Parker. That group adds to what could be a deeper offense overall, with Iowa potentially strong at running back, wide receiver, and tight end.
Of course, none of it matters until the games are played. But on paper, this is a more balanced Iowa offense than fans have seen in a while.
