Iowa enters Week 1 as a heavy favorite, and the opening line says plenty about what oddsmakers expect when Northern Illinois comes to Kinnick Stadium on Saturday.
The Hawkeyes are listed at -31.5 against the Huskies, with the over/under set at 46.5 for the 3:15 CT kickoff on BTN. That number lines up with Iowa’s history in the matchup, too. The Hawkeyes are 9-1 all-time against NIU and won the most recent meeting 33-7 on Sept. 1, 2018, at Kinnick Stadium.
The depth chart for the opener is out, and while Iowa still has some uncertainty at quarterback, the broader picture points to a team that should have the edge everywhere else. Hank Brown and Jeremy Hecklinski are still listed with an “OR” designation, but NIU’s quarterback situation looks even messier. The Huskies have Tarron Dickens, Jalen Macon and Brady Davidson listed as possible starters, a setup that could give Iowa’s defense a chance to dictate the game from the start.
NIU will also be led by interim head coach Rob Harley, and his first game in that role comes in a difficult spot. Kinnick is going to be loud, and Iowa has the kind of defensive structure that can turn a shaky quarterback situation into a long afternoon.
There is at least one place NIU can cause problems. Western Carolina transfer quarterback Taron Dickens is the name to watch, after throwing for 3,508 yards and 38 touchdowns against just two interceptions last season while completing 74.2 percent of his passes. He gives the Huskies a legitimate downfield threat and a chance to stress a new-look Iowa secondary, especially with safety Tyler Brown out of the picture.
That makes the early pass rush a major key for Iowa. If the Hawkeyes can force Dickens to operate before he wants to, they can shrink NIU’s offense fast. The Huskies also have running back Telly Johnson, who rushed for 712 yards and four touchdowns, so Iowa can’t let the ground game keep the offense balanced.
On defense, NIU brings back only one notable returner in Jay'Shon Thomas, which leaves the Huskies with fewer proven answers on that side of the ball. If Iowa’s defensive line controls the run and gets pressure on Dickens, the Hawkeyes should be in position to make life miserable for NIU from the opening whistle.

The biggest football question still hanging over the Hawkeyes is at quarterback, where Hank Brown and Jeremy Hecklinski remain part of the discussion before Northern Illinois.
