Iowa heads into Saturday’s season opener against Northern Illinois with a mostly healthy roster, but the first depth chart still came with a hit to the Hawkeyes’ depth. Five players are officially out, and the list includes four transfers who were expected to matter right away.
The biggest immediate impact shows up in the secondary. Safety Tyler Brown, who spent the offseason battling for a starting job, has been sidelined since spring with a soft tissue injury and missed all of fall camp.
Kirk Ferentz had called Brown “iffy” for week one, but the first depth chart listed him out. With Brown unavailable, Zach Lutmer is set to start at free safety, Anthony Hawkins will open at strong safety, and Jacob Wallace moves into the starting CASH role.
Brown arrived from James Madison after posting 80 total tackles, five tackles for loss, and six passes defended last season.
Iowa is also shuffling the offensive line after losing Trent Wilson for the opener. The James Madison transfer had logged 382 total snaps at both left and right guard last season and looked like a real contender for a starting spot before a minor injury knocked him out.
With Kade Pieper sliding to right guard and Leighton Jones winning the left guard job out of camp, Wilson now has time to get back and add depth later. The hope is that he returns next week ahead of the Iowa State game at Kinnick Stadium under the lights.
Wilson’s injury hasn’t been disclosed, but he is listed as out.
At receiver, Lance Beeghley’s Iowa debut is on hold, and it may be on hold for a long time. The transfer from SMU suffered an injury at the start of August, and Ferentz said during Iowa Football Media Days that Beeghley “could miss a big part of the season,” with the possibility of missing the entire year. Beeghley never appeared in a game for the Mustangs after coming out of the 2024 class as a three-star prospect from New Braunfels, Texas.
There’s a similar concern for defensive back Kyler Gerardy, an Iowa native entering his third year with the program. Ferentz also flagged Gerardy as someone who could miss significant time, and possibly the whole season, after an injury in fall camp.
He didn’t specify the injury, only that it was serious enough to keep Gerardy out for a while. Last season, Gerardy played in four games on defense and special teams, recording 29 defensive snaps, his first solo tackle against Wisconsin, and five snaps on special teams.
The final name on the list is defensive lineman Lance Ingold, who transferred from Northern Illinois after two seasons with the Huskies. Ingold could be out until midseason after getting hurt in fall camp. Last year, in his redshirt freshman season, he posted 17 total tackles and 1.5 sacks while working mostly as a reserve.
That leaves Iowa with some early-season testing to do in a few spots, even if the overall picture entering Week 1 is still far better than a team dealing with a major injury wave.
