Tyler Brown’s availability for Iowa’s 2026 season opener is up in the air, and Kirk Ferentz isn’t sugarcoating it.
The Hawkeyes’ head coach said on Aug. 26 that Brown is “very iffy” for the Sept. 5 game against Northern Illinois after the defensive back sat out all of fall camp with a soft-tissue injury.
“I think it’s very ‘iffy’ right now,” Ferentz said. “It’s a pretty significant soft tissue deal.
So, we’ll play that one by ear, and hopefully he hits a little spurt here. But probably not.”
Brown had been projected to start at the back end of Iowa’s secondary if he was healthy. He arrived as one of the more notable additions in Iowa’s latest transfer portal group, and his résumé is strong: last season at James Madison, he started 14 games at free safety for a team that went 12-1 and reached the College Football Playoff. Brown finished second on the squad with 80 total tackles and also logged five tackles for loss, one sack and one interception.
With Brown sidelined, Anthony Hawkins has been taking reps at strong safety. Hawkins also transferred to Iowa this offseason after posting 59 tackles, two interceptions and one forced fumble at Villanova in 2025.
“It’s concerning a little bit as far as like, hey, he (Brown) was really doing good,” Iowa defensive coordinator Phil Parker said on Aug. 14.
“But Anthony's done a good job. Hawkins has come in there and didn't miss a beat.
Obviously, it'd be nice to get him back. It just gives us more options in the nickel, dime situations.”
