Iowa’s season opener didn’t just end in a 40-0 shutout of Northern Illinois - it gave the Hawkeyes a first look at a few new pieces that could shape the offense and defense moving forward.
The biggest splash came from transfer wide receiver Tony Diaz, who arrived with plenty of buzz and backed it up right away. He finished with seven catches for 84 yards, numbers Iowa hasn’t often gotten from its receiving room in recent years. The Hawkeyes made a clear point of feeding him early, and Diaz delivered on the first offensive series with three receptions for 32 yards and a touchdown, plus a holding penalty drawn in the end zone.
His score came on third-and-goal from the 6, when he beat his defender across the middle with his speed. Later, he showed the kind of open-field burst that makes him such an intriguing addition, shaking a Northern Illinois defender on a bubble screen late in the first quarter and turning it into a 24-yard gain. Diaz was targeted 13 times and finished with 60 yards after the catch.
The ground game got rolling behind an offensive line that looked ready from the jump, especially on the inside. Even after Iowa lost three starters to the NFL, the interior trio set the tone in the first quarter by opening huge lanes for Kamari Moulton.
The result was eye-catching: six carries, 132 yards, and a career high in the first quarter alone. Both of his long touchdown runs came right up the middle.
Leighton Jones at left guard and Cael Winter at center were first-year starters, with Kade Pieper alongside them in the interior. Michael Myslinski and Jack Dotzler also got reps in the rotation.
On the other side of the ball, Iowa’s defensive line had its own audition. With very little production back from last season, the group came into the opener as one of the team’s biggest question marks. The Hawkeyes used the entire two-deep and then some, and the unit answered with pressure and a shutout of the Huskies’ run game.
Bryce Hawthorne led the way with four tackles and a half-sack. Kahmari Brown, the transfer from Elon, flashed off the edge and picked up half a sack, while Drew Campbell, who split starting reps with Iose Epenesa, also finished with half a sack.
