Iowa May Have Found A Special Teams Weapon In Boston Everitt

Can an outsider's fresh perspective and youthful enthusiasm give an edge to a college football newcomer in mastering the art of punting?

For a lot of football players, the game is baked in from childhood. They grow up around it, live it, and absorb all the little details long before they ever put on a college uniform. Boston Everitt came to Iowa with a very different background, and that unfamiliarity is turning into part of his edge.

The Aussie punter is in his first season playing football, and Iowa special teams coordinator Chris Polizzi thinks that lack of built-in knowledge has actually helped him settle in. Polizzi called Everitt “Boston's a great story.

Somebody that is as green to the game of football, not only college football, not only Big Ten punting here at Iowa. "But naive, I think, is an appropriate word, and he'd be the first one to admit that, "Hey, why are we -- why is it called that?

Why are we doing that? Why are we...,”

That curiosity has shown up as a strength. Polizzi said Everitt wants to learn, absorbs coaching quickly and doesn’t let one bad snap turn into a bad day. He described him as “a sponge,” praised his practice habits, and said he handles mistakes well by figuring out what went wrong and moving on.

“He does as good a job of anybody of compartmentalizing it. What did I make the mistake on and how do I move forward with that?

And just his overall maturity. He's not a young kid that gets too down on himself,” Polizzi said.

The results have backed that up. Polizzi pointed to Everitt’s production, noting, “He's not a guy that, you know, he's hit like 17 of his 27 punts have been inside the 20, and I don't even know how many landed at the one.

And he kind of jogs off and he's like, "Pretty good, right?" I'm like, "Yeah, that's excellent.

That's really good.

That even-keeled approach matters at a spot like punter, where mistakes can snowball fast and the pressure can build quickly. Iowa has already seen that Everitt can handle both ends of it, and Polizzi said he’s the kind of player a coach enjoys working with because he “appreciates the simple zeal of excelling in football.”

For Iowa, that has meant finding another strong leg with the same kind of composure that made Tory Taylor so dependable. Everitt has given the Hawkeyes plenty of the good stuff already, and the way he carries himself suggests there’s more coming.

Iowa Fans Have A Bye Week Scoreboard Worth Watching Closely

With Iowa sitting at 5-1 and headed into its next meeting with Minnesota, this bye week offers Hawkeyes fans a useful chance to look around the Big Ten and see how the rest of the league shapes up. The conference picture can shift quickly this time of year, and the scoreboard this weekend should tell Iowa a lot about what the path ahead might look like in the chase for the Big Ten Championship and a possible College Football Playoff push.

Several games carry direct implications for that race, and Iowa fans have reasons to keep one eye on the TV schedule while waiting for Minnesota. The matchups come with their own kickoff times, channels and point spreads, but the larger question is simple enough: which results help clear a little more space near the top of the standings and which ones make Iowas margin for error even thinner? Iowa Fans Will Love Gennings Dunkers Early Steelers Impact

Gennings Dunker may have only just arrived in Pittsburgh, but the former Iowa offensive lineman is already making an impression beyond his play. The Steelers made him the No. 96 pick in the 2026 NFL Draft after three seasons as a starter for the Hawkeyes, and the early buzz around him has centered on the same traits Iowa fans came to know well: toughness, consistency and a personality that tends to stand out in a room full of pros.

What makes Dunkers start with the Steelers especially interesting is how quickly he has fit into the routine around the team. Aaron Rodgers has pointed to Dunkers humor as a regular part of offensive meetings, and the rookie has also been credited with helping the locker room atmosphere. For Iowa supporters, it is another familiar reminder that Dunker brings more than just line play, and the Steelers appear to appreciate the full package already. [Read more 🡒]

Iowa Gets A Needed Reset With Big Ten Stakes About To Rise

A week off arrives at a useful time for Iowa, which heads into its bye after a strong showing at Washington and a climb to No. 16 in the US LBM Coaches Poll. The Hawkeyes will not play Saturday, giving them a chance to catch their breath after a stretch that featured a breakout performance from running back Kamari Moulton and a first career start for quarterback Jeremy Hecklinski.

Moulton powered the win with a career-high 208 rushing yards and two touchdowns, while Hecklinski settled in quickly and threw three scores in his debut. Now the challenge shifts to what comes next, because the margin for error figures to shrink as Big Ten play tightens and Iowa turns its attention to the rest of the schedule. [Read more 🡒]
