Spring Football Updates: Iowa Hawkeyes Welcome New Coaching Talent
Spring football is in full swing in Iowa City, and the Hawkeyes are making waves with some strategic coaching staff changes. Head coach Kirk Ferentz has officially announced the addition of Jay Norvell as the new running backs coach, alongside the hires of Mike Grant and Brian Smith as offensive and defensive analysts, respectively.
Jay Norvell is no stranger to Hawkeye fans. A former standout player, Norvell helped Iowa secure 35 victories and four bowl appearances during his college career from 1982 to 1985.
His senior year was particularly impressive, earning first-team All-Big Ten honors and the title of team MVP. Norvell's knack for big plays was evident with a conference-high seven interceptions that season, contributing to Iowa's Big Ten championship and Rose Bowl berth.
Norvell's coaching resume is as extensive as it is impressive. He has held head coaching roles at Colorado State and Nevada and has been part of coaching staffs at prominent programs like Arizona State, Texas, Oklahoma, and UCLA, not to mention stints in the NFL with the Oakland Raiders and Indianapolis Colts. Ferentz expressed enthusiasm about Norvell's arrival, stating, "Jay's vast experience as both a head coach and a position coach will greatly benefit our running backs and the entire offense."
Joining Norvell is Mike Grant, who steps in as an offensive analyst. Grant brings over three decades of collegiate coaching experience, most recently working with Illinois State's running backs.
His career highlights include a significant tenure at Wyoming, where he served as associate head coach. Grant's coaching journey began at Nebraska, where he was part of national championship teams in the mid-'90s.
His wealth of experience is expected to provide valuable insights to the Hawkeyes' offensive strategies.
On the defensive side, Brian Smith returns to Iowa as a defensive analyst. Smith has previously contributed to the Hawkeyes as a defensive graduate assistant and has experience in player personnel roles with Central Missouri and Wayne State College, as well as the Kansas City Chiefs. Ferentz underscored the importance of analysts in today’s game, noting, "In this era of college football, analysts play a pivotal role in preparing our coaches and our team for the next challenge."
With these seasoned additions, the Hawkeyes are gearing up for a promising season. Fans can look forward to seeing how these changes translate on the field. Stay tuned for more insights as Coach Ferentz and key defensive players meet with the media soon.
