Iowa’s big recruiting weekend in Iowa City got even better when Jan Jensen landed one of the class of 2027’s top frontcourt prospects.
Khalia Hartwell, a top-25 recruit and one of the best centers in the country, announced her commitment to the Hawkeyes after narrowing her decision to two schools. Iowa had made a strong late push after offering her in September 2025, and that push paid off.
247Sports Composite lists Hartwell as a five-star prospect, South Carolina’s No. 1 overall prospect, the No. 4 center in the class and the No. 21 overall player in 2027. At six-foot-five, she brings the kind of size and defensive presence Iowa can plug into the paint right away.
Hartwell’s calling card is on the defensive end. She uses her length and athleticism to block shots, create steals and make life miserable for opponents around the rim.
She’s also a force inside on both ends of the floor, even if her offense is still coming along. That defensive upside is a big part of why she can make an immediate impact for the Hawkeyes.
Her commitment also gives Jensen something the program has now managed in three straight cycles: a five-star addition in each class. Addie Deal signed in 2025, McKenna Woliczko followed in 2026, and Hartwell is the latest elite piece in 2027.
For Iowa, Hartwell fits into a post rotation that already includes Ava Heiden and Layla Hays, giving the Hawkeyes more size and length in the frontcourt. The program clearly sees room for her game to grow, and Jensen has shown an ability to develop post players.
There are some similarities between Hartwell and Ava Heiden, who arrived from Oregon in 2024 and has thrived under Jensen. Hartwell is already more advanced defensively, and if her offense continues to develop, she could become a major problem in the paint for Iowa.

Iowa Gets Needed Help Back But One Buckeyes Concern Just Grew
Iowa got a healthier look in its win over Michigan, with several important pieces back in the fold after working their way through injuries. Running backs Kamari Moulton, L.J. Phillips Jr. and Brevin Doll were all available, along with tight end DJ Vonnahme, giving the offense some welcome depth even if Vonnahme and Phillips were cleared but used sparingly against the Wolverines.
The defensive side, though, took a fresh hit at the wrong time. Starting safety Tyler Brown had returned from injury, but he re-aggravated his hamstring and is expected to miss the upcoming game against Ohio State, which leaves Anthony Hawkins likely to step into the lineup. For a defense already preparing for a tougher test, losing Brown again is a frustrating setback just as Iowa seemed to be getting closer to full strength. [Read more 🡒]
Caitlin Clarks Iowa Return Turned Into A Hawkeye Celebration
Caitlin Clarks first signature shoe with Nike arrived on Oct. 1, and Iowa City treated the release like more than a product drop. A three-day pop-up store downtown gave fans a place to celebrate one of the biggest names in program history, with a customization station for apparel adding to the draw and hundreds of people showing up for the chance to be part of it.
Some fans waited for hours to get inside, turning the scene into a reminder of how much Clark still means to the Iowa community. The pop-up remains open through Oct. 3 and lines up with other Nike Basketball events and Iowa sports activities, making the weekend feel less like a simple retail stop and more like a Hawkeye gathering built around one of the schools most recognizable alums. With undefeated matchups on the slate and Northwestern set for its new stadium debut, the attention in the Big Ten is spread all over the map, but Iowas home setting stands out because ESPNs College GameDay is coming to town, turning Kinnick into one of the sports biggest stages for the day.
Ohio States trip adds another layer, especially after Jeremiah Smiths eruption has the Buckeyes carrying real momentum into what looks like a true road test. The matchup is being framed through the usual lenses of defense and quarterback play, but Iowas environment gives the weekend a different feel, and it will be one of the games that tells us a lot about who looks ready to handle pressure early in the season.
