College football’s Saturday spotlight is heading back to Iowa City.
ESPN’s College GameDay will make the trip to Iowa for the first time since 2006, setting up next Saturday’s Oct. 3 showdown between the Hawkeyes and No. 7 Ohio State, according to a social media announcement posted Sunday.
Iowa earned the backdrop with a 4-0 start and a 20-19 win over No. 18 Michigan on Saturday to open Big Ten play. Ohio State arrives at 3-1 after handling Illinois 42-19 in its first conference game.
This will be the third time GameDay has landed at Iowa, and the matchup feels familiar. The show’s last visit came on Sept. 30, 2006, when the crew was in town for another Iowa-Ohio State game.
Both teams were 4-0 then, the Buckeyes were No. 1 in the country, and Ohio State rolled past a No. 13 Iowa team 38-17.
The Hawkeyes’ first GameDay appearance in 1996 also came against Ohio State.
The last time College GameDay featured Iowa in the main game was 2021, when the show went to Ames for the Cy-Hawk game between No. 10 Iowa State and No. 9 Iowa.
The GameDay crew includes host Rece Davis and analysts Kirk Herbstreit, Desmond Howard, Pat McAfee and Nick Saban. A guest will join the closing segment, where the panel makes its picks for the day’s biggest games, including Iowa-Ohio State.
McAfee had already been dropping hints that Iowa could be next, and Herbstreit also teased a possible return to Iowa City while appearing on McAfee’s ESPN show. McAfee leaned into it again during Saturday’s GameDay segment for Iowa-Michigan, picking the Hawkeyes and saying there were “GameDay implications in Ann Arbor.” Saban also had Iowa winning that one correctly.
GameDay will begin at 8 a.m. next Saturday and run until the 11 a.m. games kick off. Iowa and Ohio State are set for 2:30 p.m. Saturday on CBS.
