Iowa is taking a deliberate path with freshman quarterback Tradon Bessinger, and Kirk Ferentz made it clear the Hawkeyes want him learning the routine now, not later.
Bessinger, a four-star freshman, traveled with Iowa to Minnesota as part of that process. Ferentz pointed to the expanded travel limit as part of what made that possible.
"Yeah, he's a beneficiary of the new rule. Our rosters are squeezed down where we're the few, the proud, the free anymore.
"With our practices out there, our scout teams are basically decimated in the new world, but the good thing in the new world, you can travel 80 instead of whatever it was, 74, so we get a little room there," explained Kirk Ferentz.
Ferentz said the goal was to give Bessinger a feel for the full Big Ten game-day experience.
"He's going to be a player in the future. We wanted to get him used to just being in the game routine and traveling, all those types of things.
"That's a positive, that 74 to 80 because it allows us to travel more guys than we used to, although I'm not a big fan in taking people that are going to be spectators. It's not a field trip either, but for him it was valuable, and we'll keep doing that," Ferentz said of Tradon Bessinger's development.
That kind of move says plenty about how Iowa views Bessinger. The Hawkeyes are not a program known for rushing freshmen onto the field, and this is another sign they want him acclimated before they ever ask him to handle snaps under center.
It does not guarantee Bessinger will play this season, but it does show Iowa sees real future value in him.

Iowa Freshman Jaidyn Coon Already Faces A Tough Path To Minutes
Jaidyn Coons first taste of Iowa basketball came in an exhibition setting, and the early read was pretty simple: there is a long way to go before minutes come easy. The incoming freshman from Storm Lake, who arrived with the pedigree of a recent Iowa Mr. Basketball and a high school rsum that included leading his team to state tournament appearances, got about four minutes off the bench as the Hawkeyes started sorting out roles and rotation depth.
For Coon, the challenge is less about proving he belongs and more about carving out a lane on a wing that already has bodies competing for time. Iowa is hoping his energy and athleticism can become an asset off the bench, but for now he is trying to make every brief opportunity count while the staff figures out how his game fits into the mix. Former Hawkeyes Suddenly Have A Real Opening In Oklahoma City
Oklahoma Citys first loss of the 2026-2027 season came with an injury-depleted roster, and it also created an opening for two former Hawkeyes who have spent the early part of the year waiting for a real look. Bennett Stirtz and Josh Dix both logged meaningful minutes against Dallas, giving Iowa fans a familiar connection to a Thunder team suddenly short on bodies and searching for answers.
Stirtz, who was acquired in the 2026 NBA Draft, finished with 8 points, while Dix, the undrafted guard who signed a two-way contract with Oklahoma City, got on the scoreboard for the first time in the NBA. With Jalen Williams already out for the season and four starters unavailable in all, the Thunders thin rotation may have just turned into a surprising opportunity for both ex-Hawkeyes to prove they belong. USC Gets A Huge Big Ten Chance As Ohio State Enters Unsettled
Week 9 in the Big Ten has a way of reshaping the conversation, and the leagues biggest games are carrying plenty of uncertainty into the weekend. Ohio States quarterback situation has become the headline as it prepares to face USC, while Iowas matchup with Wisconsin comes with its own wrinkle after the Badgers were already planning without running back Kamari Moulton. Elsewhere, Indiana and Minnesota are also part of a slate that feels as much about managing personnel as it does about Xs and Os.
For Iowa, the Wisconsin game offers another chance to make life difficult for an opponent dealing with a key absence, and those kinds of details often matter most in late October. The broader Big Ten picture is just as unsettled, with USC suddenly seeing a major opening and the conference race still full of moving pieces as teams try to sort out injuries, depth charts and consistency all at once.
