Iowa Heads To Washington With A Season Turning Point Brewing

Can Iowa's backup quarterback continue the team's historic success and keep playoff dreams alive against a favored Washington squad in Seattle's unpredictable weather?

Iowa heads to Seattle this weekend with more than just a road game on the line. The Hawkeyes are staring at a matchup that could shape the rest of the season, and the setup around it is about as clean as it gets for early October football.

The forecast in Seattle calls for upper-50s temperatures and overcast skies on Friday, with the weather staying in the 50s into the evening for kickoff between Iowa and Washington. There’s no precipitation in the picture, and only a light wind out of the east. In other words: chilly enough to notice, but otherwise about as good as it gets for a game at Husky Stadium.

The bigger issue is what happens on the field. Iowa’s season feels pointed directly at this one.

A win would send the Hawkeyes into the bye week at 5-1 and leave them in strong shape for the second half of the schedule. That stretch looks tougher than it did earlier, but it’s still manageable.

Lose, and the path to a playoff berth is likely done.

Iowa also enters the game with uncertainty at quarterback after Hank Brown’s shoulder injury in last week’s loss to Ohio State. Based on Kirk Ferentz’s comments Tuesday, Jeremy Hecklinski appears set to start, with Brown serving as the emergency backup.

That’s a lot for a first-time starter to carry, but there is at least one encouraging number floating around: since 2006, Iowa is 7-1 when the backup quarterback makes his first start. The only loss in that stretch came with James Vandenberg at Ohio State in 2009.

Washington brings its own questions. The Huskies looked shaky in the non-conference portion of the schedule, and Big Ten play has already tested them.

They dropped a home game to Minnesota, with the Gophers ahead by double digits for most of the night, then blew an 11-point lead at USC last week. Even so, Washington led for a good chunk of that game, which is part of what makes this a dangerous road spot.

The Huskies also have some young players in key areas, and Iowa will try to make that matter.

The line has been on Washington all week and is now at Washington -3.5. That reflects the challenge in front of Iowa: a possible backup quarterback, a loud road environment, and a game with real season weight attached to it. Still, the pick here is Iowa 24, Washington 20, though not with much confidence.

Iowa Women Still Have One Big Lineup Question To Solve

Jan Jensen took the stage at Big Ten Media Days with a roster that looks very different from the one Iowa carried last season, and she had plenty to unpack. The Hawkeyes are blending two freshmen and four transfers into a young group that is already getting ready for a November 2 season opener, while Chit-Chat Wright and Ava Heiden joined their coach in previewing what the next step might look like for the program.

Much of the discussion centered on lineup choices, depth, and how all the new pieces might fit together once the games count. Iowa has reason to be motivated after last season ended in the second round of the NCAA Tournament, and Jensen made clear the Hawkeyes are chasing more than just a smooth regular season. The big question now is which combination gives Iowa the best chance to push deeper this time. [Read more 🡒]

Pat McAfee Reversed Course In An Iowa Moment Fans Will Love

Pat McAfee turned one of Iowas most familiar game-day traditions into a feel-good moment on ESPN, announcing live during the University of Iowas event that he would donate $1 million to the Iowa Childrens Hospital. The pledge came after a kicking contest tied to the appearance, but McAfee said he was going to make the contribution no matter how the competition played out, a shift from the conditional setup that had initially surrounded the offer.

For Iowa fans, the reversal fits into a long-running connection between the program, its game-day spotlight and the hospitals work. McAfee also said he felt bad about making the donation sound conditional in the first place and expressed gratitude for what the hospital does, adding a more personal note to a moment that quickly moved beyond the contest itself. Former Hawkeye Finally Gives Fans A New NFL Story To Follow

For Iowa fans still tracking former quarterbacks, Mark Gronowski finally has something new to follow in the NFL. The former Hawkeye, who put up significant passing and rushing numbers in college, was added to the Houston Texans' active roster ahead of their Week 5 game, a notable step after his pro career began with the Miami Dolphins as an undrafted free agent.

Gronowski had spent time on practice squads before this move, so landing on Houston's 53-man roster gives him his first real shot at being part of an NFL game week. He is unlikely to see the field right away, but the promotion is still a meaningful milestone for a player who has been working for his first active roster opportunity. [Read more 🡒]
