The Iowa Hawkeyes aren’t done yet in the transfer portal-and with just a couple of days left before the window closes, they’re still working to bolster their roster for next season. The latest name to watch? SMU wide receiver Lance Beeghley, who’s set to visit Iowa this week.
Beeghley becomes the latest portal target for a Hawkeyes program that’s been aggressive and intentional in its transfer strategy. Iowa has already added 11 players from the portal this cycle after losing eight, and they’ve made it clear they’re not just looking to replace talent-they’re looking to build depth with an eye toward the future.
Beeghley fits that mold. The former SMU Mustang redshirted his true freshman season in 2024 and didn’t see game action in 2025, so there’s not much college tape on him yet.
But what he does bring is upside-and plenty of eligibility. If he lands in Iowa City, he’ll arrive with three years to develop and contribute.
This wouldn’t be Iowa’s first move at wide receiver this portal cycle. The Hawkeyes have already added Tony Diaz from UTRGV and Evan James from Furman, both players with multiple years left to play. That’s been a consistent theme: Iowa’s targeting players who can grow within the system rather than serve as one-year stopgaps.
Beeghley was a three-star recruit out of New Braunfels High School in Texas, and while he hasn’t broken through at the college level yet, the Hawkeyes are clearly intrigued by what he showed as a high school prospect. With limited in-game experience, any potential commitment would be more about long-term development than immediate production.
Still, this is a smart play by Iowa. In today’s college football landscape, depth is everything-especially at a position like wide receiver, where injuries and matchups can quickly test a roster. Beeghley may not be a headline-grabber right now, but for a program that prides itself on development, he could be a valuable piece down the line.
The visit is scheduled for this week, and if things go well, Beeghley could become the 12th portal addition for the Hawkeyes this offseason. Whether he ends up in black and gold or not, it’s clear Iowa is staying active until the very end of the portal window, continuing to build a roster that’s deeper and more versatile heading into next season.
