Iowa Football Offers SMU Transfer WR After Eye-Catching Campus Visit

Iowa continues to reshape its receiving corps, eyeing untapped potential in SMU transfer Lance Beeghley after a recent campus visit.

The Iowa Hawkeyes continue to reshape their wide receiver room, and the latest move could bring in some intriguing upside. On the heels of a Thursday visit to Iowa City, SMU transfer Lance Beeghley has officially received an offer from the Hawkeyes - a signal that the staff sees something worth developing in the young wideout.

Beeghley, a 6-foot-2, 195-pound receiver out of New Braunfels, Texas, didn’t see the field for SMU during the 2025-26 season after redshirting the year prior. But don’t let the lack of game reps fool you - this is a player with three years of eligibility left and the kind of physical profile that fits what Iowa is trying to build under new offensive coordinator Tim Lester.

Coming out of high school, Beeghley was a three-star prospect in the 2024 class, ranked as the No. 296 wide receiver in the country and the No. 346 overall player in the state of Texas, per 247Sports. That puts him firmly in the “developmental upside” category - a player who may not have made an immediate splash at SMU but still has the tools to grow into a contributor at the Power Five level.

And make no mistake: Iowa’s wide receiver room could use the help. Since the transfer portal window opened on January 2, the Hawkeyes have already added two receivers - Evan James from Furman and Tony Diaz from UTRGV. Those additions hint at a clear priority: bolstering a group that’s struggled to consistently produce in recent years.

Beeghley’s potential addition wouldn’t just be about adding another name to the depth chart. It’s about building out a more complete receiver corps - one that gives Lester more flexibility in his first year calling plays in Iowa City. With Beeghley’s size and remaining eligibility, he offers a long-term option who can grow within the system, potentially becoming a reliable target down the line.

For now, the offer is on the table. And while Beeghley’s college resume is still a blank slate, the Hawkeyes clearly believe there’s a foundation to work with. In a Big Ten landscape that’s only getting tougher, every roster spot matters - and Iowa’s making moves to ensure they’re not left behind in the offensive arms race.
