Iowa Flips Script With Wild March Turnaround

After a season of narrow defeats, the Iowa Hawkeyes have turned their fortunes around with a string of thrilling, close victories in the NCAA Tournament.

Iowa's Impressive Turnaround: From Close Losses to Elite Eight Triumph

In the world of college basketball, the Iowa Hawkeyes have become the story of resilience and transformation. Under the guidance of Ben McCollum, Iowa faced a tough season filled with narrow defeats.

Nine of their 12 losses were heartbreakingly close, including games against top-tier teams like Iowa State, Illinois, Purdue, and Michigan. The Hawkeyes also stumbled against lower-ranked Big Ten teams such as Minnesota, Maryland, and Penn State.

Yet, something has clicked for McCollum's squad at just the right moment.

After a nail-biting exit in the Big Ten Tournament against Ohio State, Iowa has hit a winning streak, clinching three consecutive victories to secure a spot in the Elite Eight. These wins, each by six points or fewer, showcased the Hawkeyes' newfound ability to close out tight games with late-game heroics.

Their journey began with a victory over Clemson, where Iowa maintained a comfortable lead for most of the game. However, Clemson made a late push, cutting the lead to four with just over a minute left. Kael Combs then stepped up with a crucial layup, and Iowa sealed the win with clutch free throws, finishing 67-61.

The next challenge was against defending champions Florida. Despite building a 12-point lead, Iowa found themselves trailing by four with just over five minutes remaining.

Enter Cooper Koch, who nailed a deep three-pointer to regain the lead. In a thrilling finish, Alvaro Folgueiras hit a game-winning corner three with 4.6 seconds left, propelling Iowa to their first Sweet 16 in 27 years.

Facing Nebraska in a revenge match, Iowa trailed for nearly the entire game. But with the score tied at 65, Bennett Stirtz sank a pivotal three-pointer, giving Iowa their first lead. Tate Sage added another crucial three, and Folgueiras capped the comeback with a stunning dunk, securing a 77-71 victory and a place in the Elite Eight.

So, what sparked this remarkable turnaround? According to McCollum, it's all about focus and habit-building.

"Our concentration is ten times better," he noted. The players echoed this sentiment, emphasizing belief and resilience.

Senior guard Brendan Hausen likened it to life’s challenges, saying, "It's how you respond."

Kael Combs highlighted improvements on both ends of the court and a newfound confidence. "We’ve just believed in ourselves," he said. Cam Manyawu added that once the team learned how to win tight games, their confidence soared.

Now, Iowa prepares to face Illinois in the Elite Eight, riding high on their best basketball of the season. As Hausen put it, "We're trying to grasp it, we're trying to feel the joy and the emotions. Onto the next."

The Hawkeyes' journey is a testament to perseverance and growth, proving that sometimes, the toughest losses pave the way for the sweetest victories.
