Iowa Faces A Desperate Washington Team In A Huge Road Test

In a pivotal Big Ten showdown, the Iowa Hawkeyes aim to fortify their standing while the Washington Huskies, backed by desperation, strive to resurrect their playoff dreams.

The Iowa Hawkeyes walk into a Friday night Big Ten game with a lot more than a conference road trip on their hands. Across from them, the Washington Huskies are staring at a season that already feels like it needs a jolt.

Iowa is 4-1 despite the recent loss to Ohio State, and the path ahead still sits within reach. Washington, meanwhile, is 3-2 after dropping its first two Big Ten games, and the urgency is obvious. A loss here would push the Huskies to 3-3 and create plenty of noise around Jedd Fisch, Demond Williams Jr., and the rest of the roster.

This matchup is still new ground in Big Ten play. It will be only the second conference meeting between the schools, after Washington visited Kinnick Stadium in mid-October of 2024. That night belonged to Iowa, which rolled to a 40-16 win behind Kaleb Johnson’s 166 rushing yards.

Even in that game, Washington gave Iowa a look at what Demond Williams Jr. can do. He completed 12 of 16 passes for 71 yards and a touchdown, while also adding 23 yards on the ground.

The all-time series now favors Iowa, 4-3, but the history between these programs is thin for one simple reason: they haven’t seen much of each other. Before last season, their previous meeting came in 1995. And Friday brings another notable wrinkle - Iowa will play in Seattle for the first time since 1963, more than 60 years ago.

From Iowa’s perspective, the math is clean. A win would make the Hawkeyes 5-1 heading into the bye week and set up a stretch run with real playoff implications. That’s the kind of position Iowa wants to be in before the season tightens up.

None of that makes this a comfortable spot. It’s a short week, it’s a road game on the West Coast, and Washington is in a spot where desperation can turn dangerous fast.

The Huskies opened 3-0 before those two straight Big Ten losses to Minnesota and USC, and they’ll be treating Friday night like a must-answer moment. Iowa knows what’s coming.

Washington is going to empty the clip.

Iowa Lost Saturday But Kinnick Still Showed What Makes This Program Different

Saturdays loss to Ohio State did not change what makes an Iowa home game feel different from so many others around college football. ESPNs College GameDay was on campus for the first time this season, and before kickoff the crew stopped at the University of Iowa Childrens Hospital, spending time with patients and families as part of a visit that fit right into the atmosphere around Kinnick Stadium.

The bigger story there has always been more than what happens on the field. The Wave remains one of the sports most recognizable traditions, and it reflects the kind of local support that has long defined Iowa football. Even on a tough afternoon, the scene around Kinnick served as a reminder that this programs connection to its community is part of the draw. [Read more 🡒]

Iowa's QB Picture Just Got More Complicated Ahead Of Washington

Iowas Week 6 depth chart added another layer to an already fluid quarterback situation heading into Washington, with Hank Brown listed as the starter even after getting banged up in the previous game. Browns status has been a talking point all week, and the release only sharpened the focus on how the Hawkeyes plan to handle the most important spot on the field.

Jeremy Hecklinski is still in the mix after stepping in and performing well in Browns place, so Iowa does have another option if the game script or Browns availability pushes it that way. The rest of the offensive picture looks a little more settled, with Kamari Moulton listed as the lead back, though the Hawkeyes are clearly still planning to rotate other running backs into the mix. Iowa Just Got A Harsh Reminder Of The Gap They Face

Saturdays trip to Ohio State offered a sharp reminder of the difference between being competitive and being able to finish the job at that level. Iowa hung around early enough to make the game matter for a while, but the Buckeyes pulled away in a 31-14 win that underscored why they sit atop ESPNs FPI rankings after Week 5.

Jeremiah Smith was at the center of it for Ohio State, putting together a record-setting performance that rewrote the programs receiving marks for catches, yards and touchdowns in the same game. For Iowa, the result was another look at the margin separating it from the Big Tens best, while elsewhere in the rankings Missouris 45-17 win over Florida sent the Gators tumbling five spots.
