College Football Playoff hopes are hanging over Saturday night’s Big Ten showdown, and both Iowa and Northwestern walk into New Ryan Field at 6-2 with plenty to prove.
No. 20 Iowa heads to Evanston after a statement 30-0 win over Wisconsin, a game that snapped the Hawkeyes right back into form.
Hank Brown earned Big Ten Offensive Player of the Week honors after throwing for 222 yards and two touchdowns, while Iowa’s defense posted its third shutout of the season. That kind of response made it easy to forget the Minnesota loss that came before it.
Northwestern, meanwhile, has spent this season making a case of its own. The Wildcats are 6-2 under David Braun in his fourth year, and both losses have come on the road in one-score games against Indiana and Oregon.
Their offense has been productive, scoring 33.6 points per game, second-best in the Big Ten, but the news that Aidan Chiles is likely out changes the feel of this matchup in a hurry. Nicco Marchiol is expected to step in, and while he brings experience from 27 games at West Virginia, the game plan figures to look different.
That quarterback situation is a big reason the Hawkeyes Wire staff leaned Iowa across the board.
Josh Helmer pointed to Chiles’ likely absence as the biggest swing factor, noting that Brown comes in confident after last week’s breakout and that Iowa has won four straight in the series and five of the last six. With Marchiol under center, Helmer sees a night that plays into Phil Parker’s hands.
Prediction: Iowa 27, Northwestern 10
Scout Springgate still sees danger in the setting, especially with a brand-new Ryan Field and a crowd that has already caused problems for visitors this season. Even so, Springgate expects Iowa’s defense to handle Northwestern’s key weapons, including running back Caleb Komolafe and wide receiver Griffin Wilde, and come away with a tight win.
Prediction: Iowa 20, Northwestern 14
Zach Hiney also flagged the road trip as a potential trap when the schedule first came out, though Northwestern’s strong start has made the label feel a little different now. Hiney noted that the Wildcats’ offense has been electric with Chiles leading the way, but their defense has been vulnerable, allowing the third-most yards per game in the Big Ten at 374.1.
That matchup, Hiney said, should give Iowa a chance to keep feeding Tony Diaz, Reece Vander Zee and DJ Vonnahme on offense while Parker’s defense zeroes in on Komolafe and Wilde. He expects Northwestern to show it belongs, but not enough to stop the Hawkeyes from leaving with a win.
Prediction: Iowa 24, Northwestern 17

Iowa Northwestern Stakes Just Changed With A New QB Twist
A Big Ten game that already carried plenty of weight got a little more interesting this week, with Iowa and Northwestern both entering Ryan Field at 6-2 and trying to keep themselves in the league race. The Hawkeyes are going back to Hank Brown at quarterback after another strong defensive outing, a familiar formula for a team that has leaned on field position, toughness and steady play to stay in the mix.
Northwesterns side of the matchup has a new wrinkle of its own, with Nicco Marchiol likely to get the start at quarterback because Aidan Chiles is doubtful. That shift matters in a game where every edge feels magnified, and it has already sent the prediction chatter in different directions, with some analysts leaning Iowa and others taking Northwestern even before the latest injury news was factored in. Iowa Walks Into A Brutal Early Test At UConn
Iowas women are headed into one of the earliest measuring-stick games of the season, a trip to Gampel Pavilion to face UConn in a matchup that brings together two top-10 teams. The Huskies are coming off a loss to Michigan, which only adds a little more edge to a game that already carried plenty of weight because of the national rankings and the setting in Storrs.
The meeting is part of a two-year home-and-home series, with UConn getting the first turn on its floor before Iowa is set to return the favor in the 2027-28 season. For the Hawkeyes, it is the kind of nonconference test that can reveal a lot early, especially against a program that rarely offers much room for error. [Read more 🡒]
Iowa Showed The Formula Fans Needed To See Before Bigger Tests
Iowa got the kind of tune-up it needed against Eastern Illinois, rolling to a 91-47 win behind a defense that never let the Panthers settle in. The Hawkeyes held Eastern Illinois to 33 percent shooting, kept it from making a three-pointer and turned 13 turnovers into 21 points while also getting a steady offensive lift from TyReek Coleman, Trevin Jirak, Peyton McCollum and Trey Thompson.
For a team that is going to be judged more harshly once the schedule stiffens, this was the cleaner version of Iowa basketball fans have been waiting to see. The Hawkeyes shot 46.7 percent from deep, controlled the pace from start to finish and showed the kind of pressure and balance that can travel better when the tests get bigger, even if the real answer on how far it can carry them still lies ahead.
