Iowa Confirms Emely Rodriguez Return After Seven Games Away

Emely Rodriguezs return to the lineup brings both relief and renewed questions for an Iowa squad navigating injuries, discipline, and depth.

Emely Rodriguez Returns to Iowa Women’s Basketball After Extended Absence

TAMPA - After a seven-game absence, reserve wing Emely Rodriguez is officially back with the Iowa women’s basketball team. Head coach Jan Jensen confirmed Rodriguez’s return following Iowa’s 99-76 win over Penn State, a game that saw the Hawkeyes continue to flex their offensive firepower.

Rodriguez hadn’t suited up since Nov. 22 at the WBCA Showcase and had been notably absent from the bench during Iowa’s last three outings. But last night, there she was - back with the team during shootaround and on the bench during the game, signaling her reintegration into the program.

"She’s back," Jensen said postgame. "We never announced [a suspension] ourselves, but we handled that internally.

She’s back, and she’s battling a back [injury] that’s been chronic. So it’s a day-to-day situation."

While the program never publicly confirmed any disciplinary action, the timeline aligns with earlier reporting that Rodriguez had been suspended indefinitely for a violation of team rules. Jensen had previously told local media Rodriguez was still part of the team "as of now," leaving the door open for a potential return - which now appears to be underway.

Before her absence, Rodriguez had made an early impression this season. In six games, she averaged 7.2 points and 2.0 rebounds per game, including a 13-point performance in the season opener against Southern. She brings a shot-creating ability and positional versatility that fits well in Jensen’s system - traits that could be especially valuable as the Hawkeyes navigate the heart of Big Ten play.

In her absence, Iowa leaned more heavily on players like Journey Houston and Addie Deal, along with some of the younger rotation pieces. That extra experience for the supporting cast could pay dividends down the stretch, especially if Rodriguez is able to return to form and contribute meaningful minutes.

For now, her status remains day-to-day as she manages a chronic back issue. But having her back around the team - even just on the bench - is a promising sign for Iowa as they look to build momentum heading into the new year.
