Iowa Camp Just Made A Few Hawkeyes Position Battles More Interesting

Young talent shines as Iowa football players make strides in key positions during Kids Day, hinting at exciting potential for the upcoming season.

IOWA CITY - Kids Day gave Iowa fans their first real look at training camp since April, and the quarterback battle drew most of the attention. Jeremy Hecklinski was the headliner. But he wasn’t the only Hawkeye who left the afternoon looking better than he did before.

A few other players used the opportunity to show progress, and three in particular stood out.

Second-year quarterback Jimmy Sullivan made his case for the next spot on the depth chart. While the focus was on the competition between Hecklinski and Hank Brown, Sullivan turned in an unofficial 10-for-15 day with two touchdown passes. One of those scores came on a 34-yard strike to wide receiver Isaiah Oliver.

Kirk Ferentz had already singled out the Fort Wayne, Ind., native during media day Aug. 14 for the way he has improved, and for the fact that he’s been getting some reps mixed in with Hecklinski and Brown. On Kids Day, that growth showed up in the throws he was making. Sullivan connected on some deeper passes, including a corner route to Jarriett Buie and a 20-plus-yard touchdown to Brody Schaffer.

“He’s a lot more confident than a year ago,” Ferentz said. “He’s more decisive. It’s encouraging to watch him grow.”

The secondary had a different kind of opening because of Tyler Brown’s injury, and Villanova transfer Anthony Hawkins took advantage of the extra work. Ferentz said during media day that Brown, the James Madison transfer, is dealing with a muscle strain, and defensive coordinator Phil Parker has also liked what Hawkins can do at both free and strong safety.

That versatility was on display Saturday. Hawkins looked comfortable in the back end and took a few reps alongside Zach Lutmer, giving Iowa another option as Parker sorts through the positions in the secondary.

On the defensive line, Drew Campbell got a bigger workload with several players out. The third-year defensive end, who played against UMass last season, spent a lot of his time matched up with offensive lineman Jack Dotzler.

“He’s definitely catching up there,” Ferentz said. “What he needs is a little bit more time on the field working against good players, but his attitude’s been great. He’s willing and giving great effort.”

Campbell handled himself well in those reps and made Dotzler work nearly every time they lined up. He remains part of the group trying to crack the rotation as Iowa rebuilds the defensive line this season. Campbell, along with Iose Epenesa and Kahmari Brown, showed a few tricks up their sleeves.

How he fits with Kenneth Merriweather, Joseph Anderson and the rest of the line will come into focus later, but the first glimpse was encouraging as Iowa works through its new-look front.

Former Iowa QB Mark Gronowski Just Got Another NFL Chance

Former Iowa and South Dakota State quarterback Mark Gronowski is getting another NFL look after a brief detour in Miami. The Dolphins originally brought him in on a three-year deal as an undrafted free agent in April, adding a decorated college passer who left the game with a resume that included two FCS national championships and the 2023 Walter Payton Award.

Gronowski also carries the distinction of being the winningest quarterback in Division I history, which is part of what has kept him on the radar even as the pro transition gets sorted out. Miami is expected to bring him back into the fold in time for a preseason stretch that includes an Aug. 22 game against the Giants, giving the former Hawkeye another chance to keep pushing for a foothold in the quarterback room. Iowa Camp Depth Is Already Being Tested In A Brutal Way

Iowas preseason depth chart is getting stressed before the real work even starts. Kirk Ferentz said defensive back Kyler Gerardy and receiver Lance Beeghley have suffered significant injuries, a rough early blow for a roster that is always built around competition and layered depth. Gerardy had appeared in four games last season, while Beeghley arrived from SMU looking for a fresh start after not seeing game action there.

The concern does not stop there, either, because transfer safety Tyler Brown is also working through a muscle strain. For a program that leans so heavily on availability and continuity, any camp setback matters, and the way these injuries are handled now could shape how quickly Iowa can settle key spots once the season gets moving. Iowas Latest Roster Update Leaves Two Young Hawkeyes In Limbo

Iowas roster picture for 2026 got a little clearer this week, even if the outlook for a pair of young players is still unsettled. Kirk Ferentz confirmed that Terrence Smith and Ben Kueter are not currently on the football roster, a development that adds another layer to the Hawkeyes offseason evaluations as they sort out who will be available when the next cycle begins.

Kueters path has shifted after hip surgery and a lost 2025 football season, while Smith has moved on to Iowa Western as he works back from a health issue and looks to get back on the field. For Iowa, the situation leaves two promising names in a holding pattern, with the program still keeping tabs on where each one stands and what comes next. [Read more 🡒]
