That ending brought back a familiar Iowa memory: the 2009 road win over Michigan State, when Ricky Stanzi hit Marvin McNutt on a quick slant in the end zone for a 15-13 win as time expired. Vonnahme’s comparison wasn’t about record books so much as the kind of win that becomes part of Iowa lore. He said the Michigan victory belongs in the same conversation as that last-second 2009 finish, and he clearly enjoyed saying so.
The broader numbers around Iowa’s trips to Michigan tell part of the story too. The Hawkeyes are now 16-45-4 against Michigan, and Kirk Ferentz has three wins against the Wolverines, with this one the first since 2010. Against Michigan State, Iowa is 25-23-2, though the Spartans aren’t on the schedule this year.
