The Cy-Hawk rivalry is staying put, and both schools are already working on the next extension to keep Iowa and Iowa State meeting well beyond the current deal.
Iowa athletics director Beth Goetz said at Big Ten Football Media Days in Chicago that she and Iowa State athletics director Jamie Pollard have been in regular contact about a new contract for the in-state matchup. The current agreement runs through the 2027 season, following the deal signed by Pollard and former Hawkeye AD Gary Barta in 2022.
Goetz said more information on the extension should arrive “soon,” and she described the talks as an ongoing process. Iowa State announced on July 29 that the two schools had verbally agreed to push the series through the 2031 season.
According to Goetz, she and Pollard have had “several conversations” this summer, and there has been no hesitation from either side about keeping the game on the schedule.
“We don't have any intention not to move forward with that,” Goetz said.
She also said Pollard’s planned retirement next year should not affect the rivalry’s future.
The changing college football calendar has come up in those discussions, especially with Week 0 now part of scheduling conversations, but Goetz said preserving the annual game remains a priority.
“That game has been incredibly important to our fans and to our entire state,” Goetz said. “There could come a day where conference schedules and those types of things make it a little more difficult to play, but I think until then, we’ll continue to work through making sure that game’s on our calendar every year.”
Big Ten commissioner Tony Petitti also weighed in on nonconference rivalries, saying the league wants to support schools that choose to keep those games alive.
“What we want to do in the league is allow and encourage and have a system that allows our schools to make those decisions,” Petitti said. “That's the way we think about it. No matter what the rivalry game is, I think fans have an expectation about those two things and my senses in our league work hard to preserve them.”
This year’s Cy-Hawk game is set for Sept. 12 at 6:30 p.m. in Iowa City, and tickets are already sold out.
