Aaron Graves Predicts the Next Stars of Iowa's Defensive Line

Former Hawkeye Max Llewellyn shares confidence in Iowa's next generation of defensive stars, highlighting rising talents and strong coaching to tackle upcoming challenges.

The Iowa Hawkeyes are facing a significant transition on their defensive line heading into the 2026 season. With the departure of all four starters from the previous year-Aaron Graves, Max Llewellyn, Ethan Hurkett, and Jonah Pace-the team is left with substantial gaps to fill. These players were instrumental in giving Iowa a formidable presence in the trenches, making their absence a major storyline for the upcoming season.

Despite the uncertainty, there's a wave of optimism surrounding the new crop of talent ready to step up. Max Llewellyn, speaking at the NFL Scouting Combine, highlighted the potential within the current roster. When asked about future stars from Iowa's defensive line who might make a splash at the Combine, Llewellyn couldn't single out just one player.

"Kenny Merrieweather has got some juice," Llewellyn remarked. "And then there are the young guys, Joe Anderson and Chima Chineke.

Honestly, the whole line is promising. Iowa players are known for being well-disciplined and well-coached.

It could really be anybody."

Merrieweather stands out with the most experience, having played in 19 games and making notable contributions. Anderson and Chineke, both redshirt freshmen and four-star recruits from the 2024 class, are expected to see increased playing time and have the potential to make a significant impact.

Another player to watch is Iose Epenesa, a five-star recruit and a legacy player for the Hawkeyes. Epenesa, who had a brief stint on the field last season, is poised for a larger role in 2026.

Llewellyn praised Epenesa's skills, saying, "Iose has shown high-level talent you don't often see in young players. He absolutely has the potential to be here [at the Combine] in the future."

While there are many questions about Iowa's defensive line this season, the potential and talent within the group are undeniable. Llewellyn's insights offer a reassuring perspective for Hawkeye fans, suggesting that the defensive line could continue to be a dominant force in the years to come.
