Kwity Paye Joins Raiders, Shaking Up Colts' Future Defense Plans

Despite fresh faces, the Colts' pass rush challenges persist with Paye's departure to the Raiders raising familiar concerns for 2026.

The Indianapolis Colts are gearing up for a fresh look on the edge in 2026, spurred by the reported addition of free agent Arden Key. However, this change comes with the departure of Kwity Paye, who is set to join the Las Vegas Raiders on a three-year, $48 million deal.

Paye's exit might not be as detrimental as it seems. Last season, the Colts' edge rushers were underwhelming, and a shake-up was overdue.

Injuries plagued Samson Ebukam, while Tyquan Lewis struggled to make an impact. Laiatu Latu was the standout, showing promise amidst a lackluster group.

Latu's potential for growth in his third year is promising, but he can't carry the load alone. Enter Arden Key, who brings a career-high of 6.5 sacks and 11 tackles for loss.

While Key may not be a game-changer on a top-tier defense, he could complement Latu well. Still, the Colts might need another edge rusher to truly bolster their defense.

Financial constraints make a splashy acquisition like Trey Hendrickson unlikely, especially with the team already investing heavily in Alec Pierce and eyeing a re-signing of Daniel Jones. So, Key essentially steps into Paye's shoes, with hopes of matching his production.

There's optimism for improvement, though. Second-year player JT Tuimoloau is expected to step up after a challenging rookie season. Under the guidance of defensive coordinator Lou Anarumo, Tuimoloau might find his stride.

General Manager Chris Ballard could also look to the draft for reinforcements. Despite lacking a first-round pick, the depth of this year's edge rush class offers potential gems in the second round.

As it stands, the Colts' pass rush looks eerily similar to last year, which isn't ideal. For a playoff push in 2026, the edge rushers must elevate their game. Otherwise, Indianapolis might find themselves on the outside looking in come postseason.
