Justin Walley Just Gave Colts Fans A Reason To Be Excited

After being out for an entire season due to injury, Colts cornerback Justin Walley made a thrilling comeback with a pick-six against the Falcons, turning the tide during an intense joint-practice.

Justin Walley’s Wednesday at joint practice with the Falcons had a little bit of everything: a blown coverage-looking highlight on one side, then a revenge play on the other.

The Colts cornerback got beat early when Atlanta receiver Drake London climbed over him on the far sideline, hauling in a spectacular catch while backpedaling before turning and sprinting to the end zone. London’s grab had the feel of a “Moss” moment, with his arms raised high as he snatched the ball away over Walley.

Walley answered in the final 11-on-11 period, and he answered loudly. On the second snap of the Falcons’ offensive series, Tua Tagovailoa held the ball a beat too long and fired a late throw meant for London on a shallow route.

Walley jumped the pass, briefly bobbled the interception, then gathered it in and took off down the sideline for a pick-six. The Colts defense erupted as he finished the run to the end zone, turning the two-hour practice’s biggest moment into his own.

It was another reminder of how much Walley has grown into this role. The second-year nickel missed his entire rookie season after tearing his ACL in a joint-practice against the Baltimore Ravens last August, and now he’s on track to make his NFL debut against that same team. At 23, he’s spent much of camp shadowing slot receiver Josh Downs and took another step Wednesday as the starting outside cornerback.

The practice at Droplight Grand Park Sports Campus in Westfield, Ind. also featured two of the NFL’s top five running backs going head-to-head on the same field. Atlanta opened first-team work leaning heavily on Bijan Robinson, who ripped off back-to-back explosive runs and added chunk gains as a receiver out of the backfield.

Robinson showed exactly why he’s such a dangerous weapon, blending vision, acceleration and agility. Once he got to the second level, the Colts’ blue jerseys had trouble bringing him down.

Rookie strong safety A.J. Haulcy was one of the first to diagnose it, racing into the backfield for a tackle for loss.

Later, Arden Key and Grover Stewart teamed up to stop Robinson on a toss play. Third-year edge rusher Laiatu Latu kept threatening to wreck the Falcons’ plan before he ever had a chance to hit Tagovailoa, flashing burst that had him appearing in the backfield untouched on multiple snaps. On one play, Key came screaming off the opposite edge too, setting up what would have been a nasty combined sack.

Tagovailoa went 8-of-13 against Indianapolis’ first-team defense, with the lone explosive completion coming on London’s grab over Walley. London added another eye-catching catch in 7-on-7, pulling down a one-handed drag route that drew more gasps from the crowd.

Even with the attention on the defense, Daniel Jones turned in a spotless session. The Colts’ starting quarterback completed all 15 of his passes in team drills, spread the ball around and avoided any unforced turnovers. His best throw may have come at the end, when he hit Downs on a 30-yard crosser over the middle just before a heavy hit was waiting for the slot receiver.

Falcons Suddenly Have A Week 1 QB Question They Didn't Want

Tua Tagovailoas rough afternoon against the Colts in joint practice only sharpened the conversation around Atlantas quarterback situation, and it is one Indianapolis will have watched closely from the other sideline. He completed 8 of 13 passes with little success pushing the ball downfield and was also picked off and returned for a touchdown, a reminder that even in August, the Falcons are still searching for cleaner answers under center.

Michael Penix Jr. remains out while working back from ACL surgery and has not taken part in 11-on-11 work, leaving Atlanta with an awkward Week 1 backdrop it did not want this late in the preseason. Unless Penix is cleared and shows he is the better option, Tagovailoa is expected to open the season as the starter, which makes every practice rep and preseason decision matter a little more for a Falcons team trying to settle one of its most important spots. DeForest Buckners Comeback Leaves Colts Waiting On One Crucial Test

DeForest Buckners return has become one of the more encouraging developments of Colts camp, with the veteran defensive tackle working his way back from a season-ending neck injury and trending toward availability for Week 1 against the Ravens. Buckner has sounded confident about where he stands physically, and Indianapolis has been careful to bring him along with an eye on the long season ahead.

The Colts are still treating his comeback with caution, easing him into practice while managing his workload and avoiding unnecessary risk. For a defense that leans on Buckners presence in the middle, the final check is less about whether he wants to play and more about how his body responds as the opener draws closer. [Read more 🡒]

Colts Still Have One Quarterback Battle Fans Cant Ignore

The Colts still have one quarterback decision lingering as the preseason winds down, and it is not the one most fans expected to be watching. Daniel Jones is set as the starter, but Indianapolis has yet to settle on the backup job, with Riley Leonard and Anthony Richardson continuing to compete for the spot as the team moves through its final evaluations.

Shane Steichen said the choice will come after the remaining preseason game and the practices that follow, which keeps the competition very much alive for now. Both Leonard and Richardson are scheduled to get playing time in the upcoming preseason game, giving the staff one more look before it has to make a call on who backs up Jones this season.
