Jonathan Taylor’s season has started in a way nobody around the Colts expected, and ESPN’s Seth Walder doesn’t see the Tennessee Titans as the opponent that gets him back on track.
Through five games, Taylor is tied for 29th in yards per carry at 3.9 per attempt. The explosive runs that usually define his game haven’t shown up often enough either, with Taylor ranking 23rd in PFF’s breakaway rate metric, which tracks how frequently a back produces a run of 15 or more yards.
That sets up a tough matchup for Indianapolis’ ground game against a Titans defense that has made life difficult on opposing runners all year. Tennessee is allowing just 3.5 yards per rush, one of the stronger marks in football.
Walder expects that trend to continue. “Taylor will be held to under 3.0 yards per carry ... albeit in a Colts victory.
One of the only bright spots for the Titans this season is that they are holding opponents to just 3.5 yards per carry. That number drops to 3.1 against outside zone, which the Colts run 49% of the time.”
The Colts are also dealing with issues in the passing game that make the run even easier to defend. Without a consistent vertical threat, defenses can crowd the line and compress the field. After the Pittsburgh game, Shane Steichen said Taylor has been seeing a lot of heavy boxes.
That’s the bigger problem for Indianapolis right now: Taylor and the ground attack are usually the engine of the offense, but until those pieces start producing, moving the ball in a steady way is going to be a challenge.

Colts Suddenly Have A Tyler Warren Concern Before Week 6
The Colts entered the weekend with a familiar kind of late-week uncertainty, and it landed on one of their most important young playmakers. Tyler Warren was added to the injury report Friday after getting hurt in practice, turning what had been a normal build toward Week 6 into a sudden concern for Indianapolis as it prepares for the next step in its schedule.
Warren is listed as questionable, which leaves the Colts waiting to see how much they can count on the tight end before kickoff. For a team trying to keep momentum, any late addition to the report is worth watching, especially when it involves a player who has quickly become a central part of the offense. [Read more 🡒]
Colts' Defensive Overhaul Is Creating A Problem Fans Feared
Chris Ballard spent the offseason trying to remake the Colts defense into something younger and faster, but the first month-plus of the season has brought an uncomfortable tradeoff. Through five games, Indianapolis has not gotten the payoff it was chasing, and the run defense has been a particular problem as opponents have found more room on the ground than they did a year ago.
Some of that comes with the territory when a roster leans harder on developing players, and the Colts are still sorting out how the new pieces fit together in real games. The concern for fans is less about the concept of the overhaul and more about whether the current personnel is sturdy enough to hold up against the run while the younger players continue to grow into larger roles. Titans Have A Real Shot In A Matchup Few Fans Trust
A division game in October has a way of stripping away the polish, and this one carries plenty of skepticism with it. The Colts come in as the clear favorite at home, but the matchup has been framed more by unease than confidence, with both teams flashing uneven numbers and the kind of profile that can make even a solid line feel fragile.
Tennessees best path appears to come on the ground, where the Titans can try to make Indianapolis prove it can hold up at the point of attack. The Colts have been vulnerable there for much of the season, and that opens the door to a game that could stay tighter than expected if Tennessee controls tempo and keeps the pressure on a defense still looking for consistency.
