Jim Irsay Estate Stuns with Record-Breaking Pink Floyd Auction Sale

Jim Irsay's legendary collection makes headlines as the iconic "Black Strat" guitar sets a new world record at auction.

The NFL community felt a significant loss last year with the passing of Jim Irsay, the beloved owner of the Indianapolis Colts. Irsay, who was instrumental in bringing the city its only Super Bowl title, left behind a legacy not just in football, but also in the world of music memorabilia.

Following his passing, the Irsay family honored his wishes by auctioning off his extensive collection. Among the items was a standout piece that set a new benchmark in the world of music collectibles: a rare Pink Floyd guitar.

Known as the ‘Black Strat,’ this iconic 1969 Fender Stratocaster was famously played by David Gilmour on six Pink Floyd albums. Its legendary status was solidified when it sold for a jaw-dropping $14.6 million at a Christie’s auction in New York, making it the most valuable guitar ever sold. The sale far exceeded Christie’s initial estimate of $2 million to $4 million, highlighting its immense significance to rock music fans.

Jim Irsay was known for his passion for collecting rare musical instruments, and the Black Strat was arguably the crown jewel of his collection. His philosophy on ownership was clear, as he often remarked, “You never see a hearse pulling a U-Haul.” To Irsay, possessions were temporary, and he was content knowing that these treasures would eventually pass on to others who would appreciate them just as much.
