Jayden Daniels Update Turns Commanders-Colts Upside Down

As Jayden Daniels pushes to start in Week 4, the Washington Commanders must carefully weigh his competitive spirit against the risk of reinjury.

Jayden Daniels is making his case the only way he really can: by pushing through the week and putting the Washington Commanders in a tough spot ahead of Week 4.

After Thursday’s practice, Daniels didn’t reveal much to the media, which is nothing new. He tends to keep things close to the vest, especially when there’s real uncertainty hanging over his status. But even if the words were limited, the message around him was pretty clear - he wants to play.

The Arizona State product said he wants to be out there, and he also believes there won’t be any restrictions on his throwing motion if he gets the go-ahead. He’s handling it one day at a time, while the Commanders continue to avoid rushing the situation. Veteran backup Marcus Mariota gives them a workable option if Daniels needs more time, but nothing gets settled until Friday’s final injury designations are confirmed.

Daniels has already gotten through two practices, and now the focus is on how his elbow responds. That’s the part no one can fully predict until the bullets are flying in a real game. Contact at full speed is a different test entirely, and that’s where the real uncertainty lives.

The Commanders may feel fine with the process. Daniels sounds confident he can perform if cleared. But the risk never disappears - another hard hit or a flare-up is still part of the equation.

That’s why this isn’t just about what Daniels wants. Washington also has to weigh the bigger picture, and keeping his options open has already bought time after an extended week of testing helped avoid surgery and injured reserve. There was clearly enough concern after another dislocation to slow everything down, but not enough to shut the door.

Offensive coordinator David Blough would like clarity sooner rather than later. The scheme itself doesn’t change much, but everyone involved would benefit from a firmer plan. Still, Blough acknowledged the situation remains fluid.

Friday’s practice should be lighter, giving Daniels another chance to loosen up and see how his arm responds. If that goes well, it’s not hard to imagine the No. 2 overall pick in the 2024 NFL Draft being involved.

Even if the path starts with him backing up Mariota, that would still be progress.

But for a player with Daniels’ competitive edge, that probably won’t feel like enough. He wants all of it. The Commanders know that.

It leaves Washington in a tricky spot. Daniels wants back on the field.

The team has to protect itself and its quarterback. And Mariota, after running the offense effectively last weekend against the Seattle Seahawks, remains ready if Daniels can’t go.

The concern is obvious. Caution would make sense. But Daniels has already made it clear he doesn’t want any more time on the sideline, and if he truly won’t face restrictions with a brace on his non-throwing arm, then everything comes down to pain tolerance and what’s actually going on inside that elbow.

Daniels will keep pushing. The Commanders will keep weighing what’s best. And Mariota will stay prepared in case the decision goes the other way.

Colts Draft Debate Just Got More Uncomfortable At Linebacker

CJ Allens first three games have not given the Colts much reason to feel better about the linebacker decision they made in the spring. The rookie has seen limited playing time and has made only a small statistical imprint so far, which is a difficult contrast for a team that expected immediate help in the middle of its defense and believed it had addressed a key need.

Anthony Hill, the rookie linebacker in Tennessee, has turned that same class into an uncomfortable comparison for Indianapolis by opening his career with far more impact and earning AFC Defensive Rookie of the Month honors for September. It is early, but the gap in early returns has already raised the kind of second-guessing that can linger all season, especially when a young player has yet to match the expectations set by the general manager who helped bring him in. Colts London Matchup Suddenly Centers On Washingtons Biggest Week 4 Decision

The Commanders trip to London has quickly turned into more than just another international showcase, with the buildup to Sundays game against the Colts now shaped by the health of Jayden Daniels and a few other key names on Washingtons injury report. The team listed several players as non-participants or limited in practice, and the early arrival in London was part of a broader plan to settle in before a game that now carries a little extra uncertainty.

Dan Quinn has been careful not to rush Daniels back, stressing caution as Washington weighs its biggest Week 4 decision. Daniels, for his part, has made it clear he wants to play, but his mobility remains part of the conversation as the Commanders try to balance urgency with the long view. For Indianapolis, the matchup suddenly looks less like a straightforward overseas test and more like a game that could hinge on how Washington handles its quarterback situation. [Read more 🡒]

Colts Avoid One Problem Sunday But Still Face A Real Threat

The Colts got one piece of good news heading into Sundays matchup with Washington, as Jayden Daniels has been ruled out with a left elbow injury. Marcus Mariota is expected to make the start in his place, and he has already shown he can keep an offense moving after working effectively against Seattle. Even with the change under center, Indianapolis is still being looked at as the favorite in Week 4.

Still, a quarterback switch does not automatically make the Commanders an easy draw. Mariota brings a different kind of challenge, one that can alter the feel of the game in a hurry if the Colts are not sharp early. For Indianapolis, the bigger issue may be less about who is starting for Washington and more about making sure a favorable setup does not turn into a tense afternoon. [Read more 🡒]
