Giants Target Chargers Coach for OC Role in Bold Weekend Move

The Giants are casting a wide net in their search for a new offensive coordinator, with veteran quarterbacks coach Shane Day emerging as a serious candidate.

The New York Giants are continuing their search for a new offensive coordinator, and the latest name added to the mix is Chargers quarterbacks coach Shane Day. According to reports, Day is set to interview with the Giants on Saturday, joining a growing list of candidates as the team looks to reshape its offensive identity heading into 2026.

Here's where things currently stand in the Giants' OC search:

  • Todd Monken (Ravens OC, former Browns OC)
  • Willie Taggart (Ravens assistant HC/RB coach - interview requested)
  • Robert Prince (Dolphins WR coach - interview requested)
  • Jim Bob Cooter (Colts OC - interview scheduled)
  • Alex Tanney (Colts pass game coordinator - interview requested)
  • Shane Day (Chargers QB coach - interview scheduled)

Day brings with him a deep and varied coaching résumé, one that spans nearly two decades and includes experience across both the college and pro levels. His journey began at the University of Michigan in 2006 as an offensive quality control coach. From there, he made the jump to the NFL with the 49ers in 2007, where he spent three seasons in a similar quality control role.

What followed was a tour through several key offensive roles across the league and college football. He had stints with the Bears, UConn, and Washington before landing in Miami as the Dolphins’ tight ends coach in 2016. That three-year stretch helped solidify his reputation as a versatile offensive mind, and in 2019, he returned to San Francisco-this time as the quarterbacks coach.

In 2021, Day took on the same role with the Chargers, working closely with one of the league’s most talented young quarterbacks. His ability to develop quarterbacks and contribute to passing game design has made him a name to watch in coaching circles. In 2023, he joined the Texans as a senior offensive assistant before returning to Los Angeles in 2024 to resume his role with the Chargers.

Day recently interviewed for the Chargers’ own offensive coordinator vacancy, though that job ultimately went to former Dolphins head coach Mike McDaniel. Still, the fact that Day was in the running for that position speaks to how he's viewed within NFL coaching circles-as a serious candidate with a strong offensive pedigree.

For the Giants, this interview is another piece of a wide-ranging search. The team is clearly casting a broad net, looking at candidates with a variety of backgrounds-from established play-callers like Monken to younger, emerging minds like Tanney. Day fits somewhere in the middle: a seasoned assistant with years of quarterback development under his belt, and someone who’s been part of multiple offensive systems across the league.

As the Giants evaluate their next move, Day’s experience working with quarterbacks and his familiarity with both traditional and modern offensive schemes could be a strong asset. Whether he ultimately lands the job or not, his inclusion in the process reflects the Giants’ commitment to finding the right voice to lead their offense into a new chapter.
