Former Chargers Coach Suddenly Enters A Situation Fans Should Watch

Shane Steichen's tenure with the Colts hangs in the balance, yet his coaching prowess continues to attract interest from other NFL teams despite the franchise's recent struggles.

The Colts’ move to fire GM Chris Ballard has put Shane Steichen’s future in a sharper spotlight, even though the head coach remains in place for now. Around the league, there’s already a sense that if Indianapolis decides to keep going in a new direction, Steichen could have a market.

ESPN’s Stephen Holder reported that Steichen came up in conversations with teams last offseason when they were looking ahead to potential openings. One executive from a team that had a vacancy in last year’s hiring cycle said Steichen would have been one of its “top targets” had he been let go after the 2025 season.

That kind of interest isn’t hard to explain, at least from the outside. Holder said many in the league see Steichen as a “good coach in a bad situation.” He also noted that some believe Colts ownership may have held off on making a complete reset after 2025’s collapse because of a desire to avoid losing Steichen.

The results in Indianapolis haven’t matched the buzz, at least not on paper. Steichen is 27-30 as Colts head coach, and the team has not made the playoffs during his three seasons. Still, Holder argued there’s a case that Steichen has squeezed more out of the situation than most coaches could have, especially considering he has had to start eight different quarterbacks since arriving.

Steichen is 40 and his coaching climb has been a long one. He began in 2010 as an offensive assistant, then entered the NFL with the Chargers in 2011 as a defensive assistant. After spending 2013 with the Browns as an offensive quality control coach, he returned to the Chargers in that same role.

His rise continued in 2016, when he was promoted to quarterbacks coach. He held that job until 2019, when he moved up to interim offensive coordinator before keeping the role full-time in 2020.

When the Chargers let go of head coach Anthony Lynn, Steichen joined the Eagles in 2021 as offensive coordinator. Two years later, he landed the Colts’ head coaching job in 2023.

Jonathan Taylor Knows What A 2-4 Colts Team Still Needs Most

With the Colts sitting at 2-4 and headed into a meeting with the Vikings, Jonathan Taylor is keeping the conversation where he wants it: on the field and on helping Indianapolis steady itself. Trade speculation can follow any productive player on a struggling team, but Taylor is not entertaining that noise as the season unfolds. He said his attention stays on winning with the Colts and doing right by the people around him, a stance that fits the urgency of a team trying to turn close attention into actual results. Anthony Richardson Puts Colts In Tough Spot With Off-Field Trouble

Anthony Richardsons latest off-field issue has put the Colts in an uncomfortable place as they try to keep their focus on football. The quarterback was involved in a traffic stop in Carmel, Indiana, and the team said it is gathering more information after learning of the situation.

The legal process now hangs over the next stretch for Richardson and the organization, with a bench trial set for January 4, 2027. For a Colts team trying to build around its young quarterback, the incident adds another layer of uncertainty at a position where stability matters most. [Read more 🡒]
