Keenan Allen’s first weekend with the Indianapolis Colts ended with a troubling turn early Sunday morning, when the veteran wide receiver was reportedly arrested in downtown Indianapolis on alleged DUI charges just hours after making his team debut.
According to Justin Powell of FOX 59, who cited an IMPD police report and jail booking records, the arrest happened around 1 a.m. ET. Powell reported: “According to an IMPD police report and jail booking, a 34-year-old Keenan Allen, matching the description of the Colts player was arrested for DUI in downtown Indianapolis around 1 a.m.”
The alleged incident led to preliminary charges of DWI and DWI endangering a person, both misdemeanors. The report was later confirmed by other outlets, including The Athletic, which wrote: “Colts WR Keenan Allen was arrested Sunday morning and charged with two misdemeanors for DUI, according to online jail records,” The Athletic’s James Boyd wrote.
Allen had just taken the field for Indianapolis for the first time in preseason Week 3. The Colts signed him officially on Aug. 19 as the team dealt with significant depth issues at wide receiver.
Indianapolis played its final preseason game against the Detroit Lions at 1 p.m. ET on Saturday, and Allen finished with one catch for 24 yards.
The arrest could now put Allen in line for league discipline, depending on how the case develops. Under the NFL’s policy and program for substances of abuse, a first-offense DUI without aggravating circumstances typically brings a two-game suspension without pay. Still, nothing is settled yet, and it remains unclear whether Allen will ultimately be suspended or when any discipline would arrive.
Allen, a former third-round pick of the then-San Diego Chargers in 2013, is entering his 14th NFL season. He spent all but one of his first 13 seasons with the Chargers before playing the 2024 season with the Chicago Bears.
Across 171 career games with 152 starts, Allen has 1,055 receptions for 12,051 yards and 70 touchdowns. He has made six Pro Bowls and was named the 2017 AP Comeback Player of the Year.
